And then there were six. According to THR, Marvel’s search for the next Spider-Man is nearing a close and has now been boiled down to six young hopefuls: previously rumored actors Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland are on the list, as well as relative newcomers Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer and Charlie Rowe.
Holland and Butterfield are the two biggest contenders here, having had roles in high-profile films like The Impossible and Ender’s Game, respectively. I wouldn’t count the other four out though, as Marvel has a history of going for newcomers and underdogs (Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Cox, anyone?)
So, who are these new potential web heads? Lewis will next be seen in Dallas Buyers Club director Jean Marc-Vallee’s new drama, Demolition, opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts. Lintz’s talents can be seen a bit sooner than that, as he has a role in this summer’s Pixels.

I am sooo proud of our Palm Springs International Film Festival and equally happy that it's happening right in our own backyard! Just this morning, we heard that Eddie Redmayne, who is sweet and fabulous and a great actor to boot, is getting the Desert Palm Achievement Award for the 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff). He's being honored for his excellent portrayal of Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything."
Redmayne will be joining previous Desert Palm Achievement Award recipients such as Jeff Bridges, Daniel Day-Lewis, Matthew McConaughey, and Sean Penn. And according to the press release, "in the years they were honored, Bridges, Day-Lewis, McConaughey, and Penn went on to win the Academy Award® for Best Actor."
Hhhmmmm, good karma? Premonition? Happenstance? I sure hope so!
Here's the complete press release:

We've got our eye on another fairytale remake, with today's news that Cate Blanchett may be lending her signature ice-cold gaze to the part of Cinderella's evil stepmother in Disney's upcoming untitled project. According to The Wrap, the "Hobbit" star is the first in talks to join Mark Romanek's live-action rendition on the classic tale.
Before you roll your eyes at the thought of yet another take on happily ever after, consider the plot, which follows a doomed politically arranged marriage plot involving a prince and, of course, Cinderella. With Blanchett and Romanek on board, we're thinking this one won't involve pumpkin carriages and talking mice.
With that said, this won't be the first twist added to the preexisting cookie-cutter storyline—from the Muppets to gender role reversals, we break down some of the most unexpected and wacky twists we've seen in Cinderella's movie past.

The Book of Mormon was developed by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone as well as Avenue Q‘s Robert Lopez. The story revolves around two Mormons who go on a missionary trip to Africa.
The Book of Mormon: Wrongfully offensive and overwhelmingly hilarious.

Five minutes after the curtain falls on "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess," the audience should still be cheering. Their hands should hurt from clapping, their voices raspy from shouting "Bravo!"
The revival, the seventh on Broadway, indeed gets some of the audience to their feet for a fast and genuinely happy ovation, and I was among those who wanted to show the cast how great they were. But it's not one of those sustained celebrations of theater. It is not what this genuinely important and magnificent piece of work deserves.
That has nothing to do with anyone on stage because each actor is wonderful. The production never quite catches fire the way it should. Songs feel rushed and too much is explained even for newcomers to the show.
It should be one of those magical nights at the theater because this is a musical for the ages. George Gershwin, the composer,...

Kevin Whately has revealed that Lewis could soon come to an end. The Inspector Morse spinoff - which also stars Laurence Fox - has aired on ITV1 since 2006. Whately told the Radio Times: "[It won't last] a lot longer. I'm now police retirement age this year, so the time is coming quite soon, I think." He added: "You can definitely expect one more [series] next year, then after that, we'll see." Whately - who has played Robert 'Robbie' Lewis since 1987 - admitted that he originally planned to stick with the role for just a few years. "After three years, I thought 'I've done enough of this now, I better leave it and go on to something else'," he explained. "I said I wasn't going to do anymore, and luckily they persuaded me. 26 years (more)...

hollywoodnews.com: The guild nominations that continue to shore up the Oscar race transition from the Producers to the Writers, as the WGA reveals its selections for the 2012 Writers Guild Awards.
“Bridesmaids” continues to build up considerable good will, earning yet another significant nomination in the Original Screenplay category.
Other films that received a significant boost in their Oscar campaigns were “Young Adult” (written by Diablo Cody), “Win Win” (written by Tom McCarthy) and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” (written by Steven Zaillian).
The rest of the nominees include most of the anticipated heavy hitters in the Oscar race, from “The Descendants” and “The Help” to “Moneyball,” “Hugo” and “Midnight In Paris.”
Surprises were in short surprise, primarily because the continued inclusion of “Bridesmaids” is now expected, and no longer shocking. The shock, at this point, would be seeing “Bridesmaids” left out on Oscar morning.

Many people may call Warrior a modern day Rocky. It’s not. The brilliance of Gavin O’Connor’s Mma drama is that it is a multi-layered story, dealing with the breakdown of family relationships. The story is about the turmoil between two brothers, Brendan (Joel Edgerton, upcoming The Great Gatsby) and Tommy (Tom Hardy, upcoming The Dark Knight Rises) and their relationship with their father Paddy (Nick Nolte, HBO’s Luck). The Mma is just the vehicle that pushes their tense relationship forward. Having said that, the Mma battles are just as brutal as any Mma match you’ve seen before. The creative team employed some of the best Mma trainers and athletes to deliver the truest Mma experience on the big screen. The Blu-ray release is just as fierce as the movie. O’Connor didn’t skimp out on giving viewers special features. Not only can the standalone...

On Friday, September 23, Sony will release the big screen version of Michael Lewis' best-selling novel Moneyball , which went behind the scenes of the Oakland A's baseball team and showed how general manager Billy Beane used stats and numbers to put together a new team rather than conventional means. In the movie, Beane is played by Brad Pitt. The cast of the movie was in Toronto for the annual film festival, and unfortunately, ComingSoon.net didn't have a chance to talk to Brad Pitt--maybe someday he'll be famous enough for us to bother talking to him--but we did get a chance to talk to Jonah Hill, who plays Beane's right hand numbers man Peter Brand, and Chris Pratt (Andy from "Parks and Recreation"), who plays Scott Hatteberg, one of the undervalued players recruited by...

Hollywoodnews.com: The thing about the Toronto International Film Festival is that the annual event can be used as a high-profile launch for a film that’s going to reach theaters a week or two later.
This year, Sony is bringing the talent behind Bennett Miller’s baseball drama “Moneyball” to Tiff so Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill can flash their grins before the world’s top entertainment journalists. Can’t make it all the way to Toronto? No fear. “Moneyball” will open in theaters on Sept. 23.
But will Miller’s film stay in the awards discussion after Tiff draws to a close? We won’t know until we check it out at the festival next week. Let’s preview it below.

The Pottermore website tells fans far more than they need to know about Harry Potter
Harry Potter is like football. I'm talking about the literary, cinematic and merchandising phenomenon, not its focal fictional wizard. He isn't like football. He's like Jennings after being bitten by a radioactive conjuror. But, as with football, reports of Harry Potter-related events, products and personalities are everywhere. Like football supporters, Harry Potter fans seem to have an insatiable desire for more news, chat and retail opportunities related to their enthusiasm. They're standing in a monsoon screaming: "I feel so dry!" while the rest of us are getting soaked.
It's bizarre. It has the intensity of a fad but it's been going for 14 years. I think I'd find it easier to understand if I hated it. At least that would be an emotion of equivalent strength to the fans'. But, for me, it doesn't conform to...

While we anxiously await the arrival of Inspector Lewis Season IV on PBS Masterpiece Mystery Theatre, the network have decided to whet our appetites by offering up some re-runs of past Lewis mysteries.
Tonight’s episode (which aired at 1 am in most markets!) was Counter Culture Blues in which Detective Inspector Lewis (Kevin Whately) is sent to investigate when the sound of gun shots disturbs the parishioners at a local church service.
One time Avenger, one time Ab-Fab lush, Joanna Lumley was great as a kind of Blondie-style aging female rocker called Esmé Ford who everyone thought was dead. She wasn’t dead and neither was Lewis’ passion for sixties rock. The rock band Midnight Addiction, were just about as cliched as the Oasis copycat band in the U.

Shaun Evans has been cast as Endeavour Morse in ITV's prequel to the popular detective series. Endeavour, which is written by Russell Lewis (Lewis, Cadfael), will explore the origins of the character, famed for his love of crosswords, classical music and real ale. Evans, whose TV credits include The Take and Come Rain Come Shine, will play the younger version of the Oxford detective originally made famous to TV audiences by John Thaw. "Morse as a young man is a wonderful character that I'm very excited to be playing. My hope is that we can compliment what's come before, by telling a great story, and telling it well," said Evans. Endeavour will be part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the first episode of Morse, which aired on ITV in 1987. Thaw went on to film 33 more stories over the next 13 years. (more)...

We are in the middle of marketing overload and even the films that aren't Comic Con-related features are getting new marketing material this week as Columbia has debuted the first poster for Moneyball, the Bennett Miller-directed feature based on Michael Lewis's nonfiction book of the same name.
The cast includes Brad Pitt, Kathryn Morris, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright and it is sure to be a film to be considered for Oscar's Best Picture, but as I mentioned in my recent Oscar piece, the first trailer didn't have me jumping for joy as it looked a bit generic. Then again, it could have been simply a trailer to get general audience interest rather the focusing on the specifics of the film.

So we'll get to see Madonna's feature film directorial debut after all. While Lady Gaga was busy trying to dominate the music scene, Madonna was hard at work making "W.E." a romantic drama co-written and produced by the Queen of Pop. Here's the official plot:
W.E tells the story of two fragile but determined women - Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) and Wallis Simpson - separated by more than six decades. In 1998, lonely New Yorker Winthrop is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward VIII's abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. But Winthrop's research, including several visits to the Sotheby's auction of the Windsor Estate, reveals that the couple's life together was not as perfect as she thought. Weaving back and forth in time, the film intertwines Wally's journey of discovery in New York with...

Fraser is said to play Skip Gibbs, a former activist who now uses his knowledge of explosives to provide effects for Hollywood films. Robinson will play Donnell Lewis, a Black Panther in the 60's and, in '74, the assistant to Woody Ricks (the previously announced William H. Macy), a Hollywood power...

Billie Piper has jested that neighbours consider her to be "filth" due to her role in Secret Diary Of A Call Girl. The 28-year-old, who plays prostitute Belle De Jour in the series, joked that locals in her West Sussex village have struggled to separate truth from fiction and have accused her of leading actor husband Laurence Fox astray. She told Style: "Laurence is the hero, because he’s in [ITV detective series] Lewis. He’s so famous in our village and his fanclub is considerably (more)...

British actress Billie Piper feels ostracised in the small English village where she lives, because her neighbours really believe she's like the prostitute she portrays in saucy TV show Secret Diary Of A Call Girl.
The former pop star plays a high-class hooker in the popular series, which is based on the real life diaries of escort Brooke Magnanti.
But her realistic portrayal of the sordid lifestyle has left her an outcast in her adopted village in West Sussex, England - and the situation is made worse because locals love her actor husband Laurence Fox for his role in quaint TV detective series Lewis.
She says, "I get this overwhelming feeling of hostility. Laurence is the hero, because he’s in Lewis.
"He’s so famous in our village and his fan club is considerably older. They adore him and see me as his tainted, mucky wife.
"Honestly, they’re not big on me. I think they see him as muddying himself with 'that filth.' It can get quite cold.
"The looks I get off some of the older guys in the street. Some of them like to think you’re a prostitute for real. 'No, I’m an actress playing a prostitute'."...

Best DirectorDarren Aronofsky'Black Swan'In many ways, Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" is similar to his previous film, "The Wrestler." Both lead characters are dedicated artists struggling with inner demons. To express themselves, they have only their bodies. Their age, injuries, and mental stability threaten to undermine their art. However, in "Black Swan," Aronofsky masterfully adds another layer. He parallels the journey of Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) with the tale of "Swan Lake," the tragic ballet in which she performs. The astute viewer will notice his use of black and white in the set pieces of almost every scene, alluding to the contrast between the white and black swans. He adds elements of horror, drama, and paranoia, all of which exist in "Swan Lake." He directs the actors in such a way that you aren't ever sure what is fantasy and what is reality. All of these elements add...

The cast for Us cable drama Homeland is getting increasingly full, and now two British talents have leapt aboard in the shape of Damian Lewis and Laura Fraser. While the show as of now only has a pilot order from the Showtime channel across the pond, it increasingly sounds like something we’d be interested in following. Crafted by 24 veterans Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa alongside Gideon Raff, Homeland follows Us Marine Sergeant Scott Brody (the role Lewis will take), who is taken prisoner in Iraq during the 2003 invasion. After nearly a decade spent in captivity, an attack on an enemy stronghold at last results in his release and return home. But all is not as it seems – at least according to troubled CIA officer Carrie Anderson (Claire Danes). She has reason to believe that Brody’s escape from prison was no coincidence and that he might be part of...

On Tuesday night, HeyUGuys fussed ever so slightly over what to wear to walk down the red carpet in Leicester Square on behalf of Sky Movies HD for the third chapter in the Narnia film chronicles. I say slightly because no sooner had I chosen appropriate attire for the Royal Film Performance I had to cover it all up with two cardigans, a scarf and a very thick, oversized coat. We’re not sure whether it was 20th Century Fox or Aslan organizing the precipitation but no premiere could have asked for more appropriate weather conditions as the snow fell delicately across the square’s stunningly arranged tableau and various pink-cheeked stars.

Juliette Lewis is known for some great roles in great movies – What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Natural Born Killers, and Husbands and Wives, just for starters. And I would be lying if I didn’t think that National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation deserves to be up there, especially as my family annually worships that movie so.
With the Oscar-nominated actress’ latest performance, Lewis dials down the screen time, but ups the supporting character ante in Conviction. In the film she plays Roseanna Perry, a subject in the trial who holds a key to the truth about whether Betty Anne Waters’ brother, Kenny, really did commit murder in 1983. Lewis is in the movie for a total of maybe ten minutes, but her performance is memorable after the film is over.
I had the chance to discuss with the rebellious actress what it was playing this character, how this role fits into her diverse filmography,...

If you missed last week's premiere of the new batch of "Inspector Lewis" episodes on PBS' "Masterpiece Mystery," you weren't alone. Pledge drives pre-empted "Counter Culture Blues" in some markets, including Chicago.
But while you still have time to catch that episode online (PBS.org), don't miss Sunday's second episode, "The Dead of Winter" (9 p.m. Eastern, Sept. 5, but check your local listings).
The "Lewis" franchise is an extension of the popular "Inspector Morse" series, after the death of both the character Morse and the actor who played him, John Thaw. Thames Valley (UK) Police Inspector Robert Lewis (Kevin Whately) is out from under the shadow of the legendary Morse and has his own No. 2, the enigmatic Sgt. James Hathaway (Laurence Fox).
In "The Dead of Winter," we learn a little of Hathaway's past when he and Lewis are dispatched to an Oxford country estate that may have been the scene of a murder.
