August’s home entertainment releases are off and running in a big way with this week’s crop of horror and sci-fi titles, as we have nearly two dozen movies coming our way this Tuesday.
Scream Factory is putting in overtime with a handful of stunning steelbooks celebrating three great John Carpenter films—They Live, The Fog and Escape From New York—as well as a Collector’s Edition of James Gunn’s Slither and the indie horror films Don’t Knock Twice and House on Willow Street (which they’ve teamed up with IFC Midnight for).
As far as recent genre movies go, Colossal, Shin Godzilla, and Phoenix Forgotten are all primed for their home bow on August 1st, and both Paramount and Universal are dusting off a bunch of recent titles on both DVD and Blu-ray, including Disturbia, The Machinist, Red Eye, and the unrated version of The Ruins.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter early Friday morning to slam “3 Republicans and 48 Democrats” for failing to pass a stripped-down version of a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The President said they “let the American people down.” 3 Republicans and 48 Democrats let the American people down. As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal. Watch! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 28, 2017 The Senate voted 49-51, with Arizona Sen. John McCain splitting from fellow Republicans to cast the deciding vote. Whenever San Diego Comic-Con rolls around each July, one of the panels I look forward to most is that of the one put on by those who put together the wonderful line of DC animated movies. Not only do they premiere their next film that’s set to arrive in stores, but they also tend to announce the following year’s slate. Needless to say, they didn’t disappoint this year, as they confirmed the releases of what are sure to be several greats, chief among them Death of Superman.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, and instead talk about the next batch of flicks in the order they’ll be chronologically released.
First, there’s Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, which we actually learned about not long ago thanks to the back cover to the Batman and Harley Quinn Blu-ray leaking online. In short, it’ll follow a...

Or, “Never on Sunday with Your Stepson.” Director Jules Dassin’s monument to his beloved Melina Mercouri transposes a Greek tragedy to a modern setting. The pampered wife of a shipping magnate is like a queen of old — she can fling a priceless gem into the Thames on just a whim, and she goes in whatever direction her heart takes her. When her attractive stepson Anthony Perkins enters the picture, there will be Hell to Pay.

Castle has ended for good with a season 8 finale that doesn't do justice to the strength of this show's actors, or its fans' love...
This review contains spoilers.
8.22 Crossfire
I’ve tried. I’ve tried really hard. I’ve watched and rewatched, and there’s only one conclusion: Crossfire is downright insulting to the Castle audience.
As I suggested last week, I’m not exactly surprised by this. The series finale doesn’t just conclude the show, but brings to end one of the most excruciating seasons ever of a show that I otherwise liked. It’s not that I haven’t always had my problems with Castle. I have. But I’ve been a fan of Nathan’s since his short stint on Buffy, where he played, the Gentlemen from Hush aside, the only truly frightening villain the show ever had. And so I’ve followed him,...

8.21 Hell To Pay
Well, it’s finally happened. The axe has fallen, and ABC has officially cancelled Castle.
For most fans, it seems, the news is being met with a mix of resignation and relief. After all, the show has been a stalwart for ABC, with die-hard fans of Caskett and Fillion tuning in reliably for the last eight years. Unfortunately, ever since Andrew Marlowe stepped down as showrunner, the series has lost its way. That culminated in this season’s confused, canon-and character-contradicting LokSat storyline, which seemed to cut the heart out of what made Castle so enjoyable: the chemistry between not only the show’s romantic leads but the entire ensemble. But still the fans held on.
When ABC announced that one of those leads,...

So Hayley and Alexis are gay for each other, right? Because I don't know how many different ways there are to interpret the situation anymore. In the immortal words of Orange is the New Black's Pennsatucky, "They lesbian-ing together." Exhibit A: This episode, "Hell to Pay," opens with Hayley and Alexis having a cocktail-dresses-and-scotch party in Castle's Pi office, in the middle of a blackout. The mood is somewhat broken when an ax-wielding man breaks in and promptly drops dead. Later, after everything has been resolved, Alexis utters the phrase, "If I can't sleep tonight, I'm kicking your ass in the morning." Come on, what am I supposed to do with that, Castle? You've only got one episode left before you are officially dead to me, so you might as well go full-gay.
