Another Morman exploitation film...
Reelvoice13 September 2007
With a slow choppy beginning, "Return with Honor" tries to resurrect its poorly directed story path by slipping in a few amusing moments. Javen Tanner meager mellow dramatic acting job is luckily drowned out by the film's phenomenal supporting cast. Tayva Patch delivers a marvelous performance as the Return Missionary's bewildered Mother trying to find her way after a life of wrong turns. Raymond Zeiters, plays Javen's voice of reason best friend who steals the show with an honest performance. Tracy Garner (also the film's writer/producer) adds to the great supporting cast as the obnoxious Bar Owner. All in all, "RWH finally finds its path with an okay twist of faith ending. I'm not big on Mormon exploitation films, but if you like film about the LDS faith you'll probable gobble this one down and ask for seconds.

Best in the Genre
suzzeQ21 September 2007
Of all the 'church films' I've seen, I give this my highest rating. The story and plot were great and the acting was very, very good, especially the main character, Row, and Corbin, the friend. I really liked the way it built, the editing, directing and, well, all of it which I don't want to give away so I'm not saying too much. If you liked States of Grace, you will like this one, too. MUCH better than Left Behind.

You will learn a lot about yourself and a lot about true love in this movie.

I have a friend who died during a tonsillectomy-however you spell it-and was brought back to life, and said amazing things about what 'God' said; which was a miracle in itself since he knew nothing about God, so all those people who don't like that part-sorry. It happens. He was told that his life wasn't finished. (He remembered every detail, even though he was given a drug to make him forget everything from the surgery.) The movie doesn't go into unnecessary ornamentation; it goes from point to point, and you have to pay attention. I went twice, I liked it so much, and it's the first time I've ever liked a film better the second time around.

I want everyone I know to see it, and I want to buy the DVD when it comes out.

Interesting and Entertaining
mormonflix17 November 2013
Sure it is not the best missionary movie, but it is the most real when missionaries come back from their mission and this happens. Sure it is understandable that they would push the envelope a little more. It is well made and is great to watch over and over again. I especially love the song in it!

There have been people who have said that this movie is no good, but I tend to differ from the norm. It brought a new side into the RM and it is was really entertaining. There are many things that I love about the movie and one of the best parts is the end. Not that it ends, that is where I found to be the most shocked!! A surprisingly good movie....

Warning: Spoilers
I recently got a look at this film at a private screening and was surprised that I actually liked it. This type of movie is usually not my cup of tea but I try to be open to all genres, types, and directing styles. Being a fairly serious movie goer and appreciator, I found the writing and storyline of The Return done well. Although there is slight religious overtones throughout, I didn't find it repulsive, and I didn't leave the theater either ! It was obvious to me that there wasn't a high budget involved in the making of this movie, but what was done was done well and convincingly. There was a good balance of sucking different emotions out of you, particularly the more lighter, funnier moments, which were in proportion to the rest of the movie. Tracy Garner's writing skills were obvious to me right from one of the beginning scenes with Rowe Mcdonald's farewell to his missionary friends. Tracy Garner also showed talent as an actor with his part as the sort of obnoxious jerk Scottie Patterson. It's worth seeing. I'm looking forward to Mr.Amundsen and Mr.Garner's next movie.

An excellent film within its genre
redleader5521 September 2008
Among films of its genre, this is a great film. While it's based on a Latter-day Saint theme, the religious touch is light and the basis thrust of the story is personal relationships and redemption. The script is very tight, the characters are well drawn, the dialog is sparse and direct, the cinematography is incredibly well-framed for a low-budget indie production. The supporting cast is extremely good and well-rounded.While many of the cast members don't have long resumes, you would guess they are veteran actors. I've seen a few of the more well-known Latter-day Saint productions, and some of them can be pretty cheesy in both acting and production values. This film has none of those qualities. Very much worth watching.

Well written, well crafted film - I loved it!!
vegascameraman28 March 2011
I'm not a Mormon, and generally shy away from films with religious genres. But I watched, "Return With Honor" last night for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was well written, and crafted in such a way that kept me wanting to see what would happen next - and I was delighted by changing events that were inventive rather than cliché.

This is a warm, family appropriate film that has inspiring messages and a story line that keeps the viewer engaged through the final scene. By all accounts, Return with Honor has the production value of a film made for eight times it actual budget. And I'm sure with A-list talent, it would have received the attention it rightly deserves. Despite this, I found the performances convincing, and more than what I might normally expect from a low- budget, indie film I highly recommend it.

Screened this film at Worldfest - Great!
kayan10201027 May 2007
I was lucky enough to see this film at the Houston Worldfest Film Festival. The theme is powerful and universal and unfolds in a subtle, moving, thought-provoking way. I found myself thinking about Return With Honor and reflecting on it long after I left the theater. I particularly liked the way it allowed the audience to absorb the message through its believable, flawed characters and dialog that speaks TO the viewer not AT them. The audience, engaged from the beginning, sat mesmerized in silence by the end. After the screening, I spoke with the writer/ producer, Tracy Garner. His personal journey to write and produce this film was inspirational. I was impressed by the combination of his enthusiastic determination and genuine kindness. It is hard to believe he plays Scotty, the jerk, in the film. Great acting! Great writing! Great film! Not just one of the best independent films I have seen... one of the VERY best films I have EVER seen. Life changing.

A very good movie
carolyn-phillips21 July 2006
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It had a good story and the ending left you stunned and in awe. It was very well written and executed. I did notice something funny, though. When the person was putting the x's on the board counting down his days; the one who put them up was left handed except for the last one and that person was right handed. I had to chuckle. (It may have been the other way around.)

One didn't have to worry about bad language or skimpy clothing, which many, or even most films, exhibit today.

All in all, I rate this with a 10. Keep up the good work Tracy and Michael. Carolyn Phillips

Surprisingly well made

Warning: Spoilers
This movie does a good job at demonstrating the creators love their craft and really try to create art, rather than you stereotypical Christian genre movie that is just clearly a low effort cash grab. I enjoyed the concept of someone being given a second chance and not suddenly being perfect. They kept making the same mistakes over and over again and the more effort he put in to trying to do what he thought he should, the more he messed things up. (Spoilers) That is, until the end where he finally has a realization of what everything was about and for, and he stops trying to force his will, instead to just love fully for who they were as they are. Then miraculously everything works out. I've seen this done before and it's usually pretty cringe and feels like it's a forced happy ending, but this movie did a solid job at making it feel natural and had good reasoning to happen the way it did. Bit of a tear jerker if I do say so myself, but maybe I'm just a sucker for happy/sad endings.

This movie does have it's faults. If I was watching it with someone, I might have felt a little more aware that the slower scenes were a bit awkward, but because I was alone I got to just enjoy and admire the passion and the artistic choices of the movie. These decisions were clearly made intentionally, and it shows through in its quality and style.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. And more than I expected to, to be honest. 8/10. Would watch again.

Excellent movie, especially for LDS
loperlandacres8 January 2010
I may be easily entertained, but I LOVE this movie! I am so tired of the stupid Mormon comedies; this is a breath of fresh air. Non-LDS folks probably would not appreciate the overall theme of this movie, but the story line in unique and engaging. In my opinion, the acting is what makes this such a great film. All of the actors are top-rate and seemed very real to me. The girlfriend/fiancé is a bit annoying and difficult to watch at times (not to mention how immodestly she dressed), but everyone else is true to life and enjoyable to watch. I bought this movie and have seen it twice now. Very impressed! Kudos to Tracy Garner who not only plays the jerky bar owner, but also wrote and produced this film. I hope to see more of his work in the future.

Not really appropriate

Warning: Spoilers
So it's supposed to be a movie about a Mormon missionary getting a chance to be a better person on his return, but they forgot some very important things. First, there is no missionary that would return and be alone in a house with his fiancée. Being a returned missionary myself, I can tell you, for sure, that no returned missionary would be that comfortable even being around a girl. True, it seems that they are supposed to be together, but there's not a single case where they would even come close to the susceptible temptation. What's more, why hang out in a bar, night after night, where there's temptation abounding, to talk to a mom who is clearly troubled? I mean, yes, the mom learning the gospel is nice, but he spent most of the 60 days messing everything up and leaving himself in the path of temptation when he was supposed to learn what he needed to learn.
