Intrinsically talented, both, separately and jointly, gave a new direction to Hindi film music. But to achieve this, Asha Bhosle and Rahul Dev Burman had to surmount a major “hurdle” – creating a new identity distinct from their illustrious and established kin: elder sibling Lata Mangeshkar and father Sachin Dev Burman.
And both succeeded – with a combination of luck, support, their own undeniable virtuosity, and above all, their first joint effort.
AshaBhosle – who is still going strong at 90, having worked with four generations of music composers from O P Nayyar to A R Rehman – added a sensuous allure and element of forthrightness for the Hindi film heroine, without becoming risque or boisterous, even as Burman adroitly used pop and jazz to good effect in electrifying film music – bringing the age of Elvis Presley and the Beatles to India.

Singer Asha Bhosle, who carved out her own independent niche and ruled the roost over the world of music, turns a ripe old 90 on Friday, and notwithstanding a long and eventful musical journey of eight decades, neither her vocal cords are tired nor has she retired…
It was back way, some 80 years ago, when a petite 10-year-old girl Asha Mangeshkar earnestly stood before a studio microphone and recorded her first playback song for composer Datta S. Davjekar, ‘Chala Chala Nav Bal…’ for a Marathi film (‘Majha Bal’ – 1943).
Though it came just a year after her father Pt. Deenanath Mangeshkar’s passing (1942), Asha’s maiden number did not exactly set the film industry on fire but she continued to get humdrum singing assignments, and like her older sibling Lata Mangeshkar, continued the uphill musical sojourn.
After many Marathi songs, she finally landed a Hind film song assignment for ‘Chunariya’ (1948), and then...

Shamefully there were only five people at Saroj Khan’s funeral on the morning of 3 June. Three of them were her children(a son and two daughters) and two were choreographers Remo d’Souza and Ahmed Khan.
Saroj Khan was to Bollywood choreography what Naushad was to film music. Before her choreographers were shadowy figures in the background .She brought a full-bodied recognition to film choreography , and also prompted Filmfare to instate an award for choreography.
Actresses specially Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit dancing to Ms Khan’s rhythms acquired a special allure.
Saroj Khan was a perfectionist in her dance moves and unsparing in her quest forthat perfection.
A very popular actress from the 1990s tells this anecdote about her experience of being choreographed by the mighty Saroj Khan.Apparently the actress couldn’t get the steps right.

Saroj called actress aside and asked, “There is no lachak(swing) in your dance steps.

Looks like Ranbir Kapoor is a very loyal friend. The actor who is the next big thing in Bollywood has always returned the favour of friendship in whichever way he can. The actor has done something similar with childhood friend Binoy and the director claims that Ranbir will star in his next film.

This week Deepika Padukone's character will perform an elaborate Kathak dance number in front of Ranveer Singh's character for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani, although Ranveer is Missing In Action.
The song to be shot over the next week would stretch into a good 7 minutes of non-stop dancing by the indefatigable Deepika Padukone.
Says a source close to Sanjay Leela Bhansali productions, "The last time Deepika danced for Mr. Bhansali, she created magic in the garba dance number 'Nagara sang dhol'. On a mid February evening, Leicester Square was draped in pink and orange, the colours of Rajasthan. Although the heat of Rajasthan was certainly absent, with the London air becoming increasingly biting, one could have been stood in India at a wedding.
The air heavy with Bhangra and Bollywood beats, archways protruding with colourful marigold flowers, it was time to celebrate the world premiere of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel!
The evening was one full of fun and celebration.
Karan’s Bollywood Masterclass (Kbm) built up the anticipation and entertained the public waiting with their slick Bollywood moves to beats such as Taal, Nagara Sang Dhol and Malang.
Gracing the orange carpet were the cast and crew of the film including Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Tina Desai, Lillete Dubey, Diana Hardcastle, Shazad Latif, director John Madden, writer Ol Parker and producer Graham Broadbent.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha is the latest offering from Yash Raj Films starring Ayushmann Khurrana (Vicky Donor) and debutante Bhumi Pednekar. It also marks Sharat Katariya (of Bheja Fry fame) changing gears from writer to director.
It film features music by Anu Malik (Main Hoon Na), composing after almost two years, his last being Shootout at Wadala. Lyrics have been penned by Varun Grover while vocal talents featured consist of Monali Thakur (‘Sawar Loon’ – Lootera), Papon (‘Tu’ – Bobby Jasoos) and Kumar Sanu (no introduction needed).
The album gets off to a stunner of a start with Moh Moh Ke Dhaage by Papon. The track is very reminiscent of Anu Malik’s more nuanced work in Asoka and Refugee. The orchestration is beautiful as is the haunting melody. Couple with equally beautiful lyrics and a flawless rendition from Papon, the track is any easy winner. ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage’ is repeated...

Nidhi Dutta took her father, Jp Dutta, by surprise when she informed him about her aspirations to act. It was while she was still serving as the seventh assistant during the making of Umrao Jaan, that she finally told her father that she has been dreaming of facing the camera for many long years, just like her mother Bindiya Goswami Dutta.
“At the age of two I was dancing to ‘Chaiya Chaiya’ in a diaper,” she says, “I’ve been a drama queen all my life, the lakta-jhatkas come easy,” Nidhi says with pride.
Nidhi’s debut film Jee Bhar Ke Jee Le, which is being produced by her father under a new youth-centric banner, Jp Gene, is directed by Binoy Gandhi. “Papa took the muhurat shot which had me speaking a line from his film Refugee. The Westbury gallery in London’s Mayfair was recently adorned with rare Bollywood memorabilia. “Conferro Auctions”, a British based auction house, premiered through a special and rare event – a vintage Bollywood auction that took place on the 29th of November.
Consisting of a 150 lots, the memorabilia reflected a wide range of vintage Bollywood posters, banners, LP’s, synopses, lobby cards and gramophones. From Amitabh Bachchan’s angry Deewar (1975) to Rehka’s courtesan persona in Umrao Jaan (1981), the gallery was truly a celebration of Bollywood and the history that has been made since the very first Bollywood film Raja Harishchandra, a century ago in 1913. The auction covered the myriad of Bollywood’s journey, including the shockingly erotically charged poster for Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) to the vintage Purab aur Paschim (1970) LP and so much more.

Following on looking back on Ana Singh’s career we decided to do interview the designer to find out her thoughts on Indian cinema celebrating 100 years, working in the industry and of course fashion.
Indian cinema is celebrating 100 years, what does it feel like to be a part of the industry?
It feels totally wonderful to have been part of this illustrious industry for 25 years and I have also had the good fortune to work with style icons such as Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, Pooja Bhatt, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala, who have all created huge trends that became hugely popular with the public. Unfortunately today, at least in my opinion, actors are dressed uniformly and I don’t feel we have seen any new style icons created.

For Anu Malik and family, it is more 'khushi' than 'gham'. Even though the composer won't be a part of the jury for the seventh season of music reality show 'Indian Idol', his music for Shootout At Wadala is expected to bring him back in the reckoning as far as Bollywood is concerned. What has further elated the Malik family is daughter Anmol being roped in as a lead singer for a major track in the film Bhajathe Raho. "Maliks are going through a roller coaster emotional ride for sure. On one side, his 'Babli Badmaash' from Shootout At Wadala has already caught up heat, especially with Priyanka Chopra gyrating to the Sunidhi Chauhan sung number. On the other hand, his daughter Anmol has caught fancy of other composers as well. For Bhajathe Raho, she has sung a special song which the makers are pitching different when compared...

Himesh Reshammiya has a tendency to divide listeners into the love him or hate him camp with that distinctive voice of his – so if you already know you’re not a big fan of Himesh and his characteristic nasal delivery, you might be wise to steer clear of the super-sized Damadamm soundtrack, since Himesh provides vocals for every one of the 15 tracks (9 originals, 5 remixes and a “promo video track”) on the epic album.
Luckily, I love Himesh, and I even love him when he goes fully nasal, so 15 tracks? No Problem!
Opener Damadamm starts out like a traditional Sufi qawali… for about 2 seconds, until a deliciously addictive disco beat kicks in and the tune is transformed into an infectiously upbeat disco-qawali. With a veritable truckload of vocalists: Punnu Brar, Palak Muchhal, Shabab Sabri, Alam Gir Khan, Sabina Shaikh, Himesh Reshammiya, Vineet Singh and Rubina Shaikh – all contributing, the song has a likeable,...

November 12, 2010: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, this dainty gal, who mesmerized audiences with her performances in many movies like Josh, Hum Dil Chuke Sanam, Aa Ab Laut Chale, Devdas, Guru, Umrao Jaan etc is considered to be one of the top rated stars in B-town.
According to recent reports in a popular news channel, the lady has only two major hits in her career, namely Hum Dil Chuke Sanam, Guru and Dhoom 2.This is because the other popular films of hers did quite well but were not money churners at the box office! But what makes this gal so popular in spite of the fact that she has major flops in her career?
Almost being seen as a plastic doll, this damsel with her grace and style.

'Guru' (2007)
Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, R. Madhavan
While actor Abhishek Bachchan might seem like a natural to play romantic heroes, given his looks—and he's usually cast in that type of role—he does his best work when playing unconventional, even unlikeable, leads—for example, his exceptional portrayal of a thug in 'Yuva' (2004). His turn in 'Guru' as a business tycoon with slippery morals is likewise one of his finest performances. The film chronicles the rags-to-riches rise of his character, Gurukant Desai, a poor Gujarti boy who goes first to Istanbul and then to Mumbai to make his fortune selling textiles. He's not book-smart, but he's a savvy hustler, and he gets ahead the only way a common man can—by bending the rules. His arrogance and ambition take him far, and he eventually becomes the king of a polyester manufacturing empire.

Abhishek Bachchan admits he is going to team up with wife Aishwarya Rai for Rajiv Menon's next project - a remake of the 1973 evergreen hit film "Abhimaan". But Abhishek clarifies that it wouldn't be an exact copy of the film his parents starred in. "Yes, Rajiv is a very dear friend. He directed Aishwarya earlier in the Tamil film 'Kandukondain Kandukondain'. He approached us with a subject that isn't exactly a remake of 'Abhimaan'. But it's very similar. We've both approved and attached ourselves to the subject," Abhishek told Ians. This will be his seventh film with Aishwarya after "Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke" (2000), "Kuch Naa Kaho" (2003), "Umrao Jaan" (2006), "Guru" (2007), "Dhoom 2" (2007) and "Sarkar Raj" (2008) and Mani Ratnam's next, "Ravan".For the moment, Abhishek's kitty is full."...

'Umrao Jaan' (2006): The film is a remake of a 1981 Bollywood picture by the same title and both are based on the 1905 novel 'Umrao Jaan Ada' about the life of a famous courtesan in the Indian city of Lucknow in the mid-1800s. Real-life husband and wife Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai play the romantic leads—and they are as gorgeous together onscreen as they are off. Rai’s portrayal of the hapless Umrao is creditable, but Bachchan brings little to his role, other than looking dashing in period attire and staring at his co-star like he wants to devour her. The film’s biggest problem, however, is the lack of strong conflicts to drive the story, as it merely recounts a long series of tragedies that devastate Umrao. Still, the movie is set in an enchanting time and place in India’s history, when Lucknow’s brothels were the epicenter of culture.

Post marriage there were rumors in the industry circles that Aishwarya Rai will prefer to do films only with hubby Abhishek Bachchan. The couple was earlier seen in films like Kuch Naa Kaho, Umrao Jaan, Guru and Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar Raj paired opposite each other.
