The scene is winter time, around the Holiday season. The child, who has never tasted the joys of life, passes a toy shop, where a large doll is displayed in the window. It fascinates and inspires her. She passes on, her childish fancy aroused by the beautiful face and the wonderful waxen features, which linger with her through her dreams. Finally the day comes when the doll is no more. Inside, a richly clad woman, leading a little child, rushes past the waif and into her carriage, leaves the child like one suddenly bereft of all that has made life worth living. Through an unshaded window she again sees for the moment her beloved doll in the arms of the millionaire's daughter. Suddenly the shade is drawn and she is left alone standing in the snow with only her memories. She sinks, weary and exhausted on the steps of a nearby church. In her dreams once again she sees the beloved doll. Only this time she presses the beautiful image to her face, and is happy. Later when her half-frozen form is brought to the city hospital ward, she wakes for a moment, stretches her tender arms toward Heaven, then sinks into a last sleep.
