Plot Summary

The documentary, with contributions from more than fifty politicians, scientists and environmental activists, approaches the deep problems facing the Earth's life systems: global warming, deforestation, mass extinction of species, depletion of the ocean environment. At the same time, it proposes potential solutions to these problems by calling for empowering actions and reshaping and re-evaluating global human activity through technology, social responsibility and nature conservation. Goofs In the subtitles of an interview with Mikhail Gorbachev, the former USSR premier is translated as saying that because we have strained nature to the breaking point, "we must, the generations living now, must take a principal decision that we will act differently because the ecological crisis is global." Taking "a principal decision" is an odd turn of phrase, at best, in this context. Almost certainly, Gorbachev said "we must take a principled decision." See more »

Quotes Stephen Hawking: One can see from space how the human race has changed the Earth. Nearly all of the available land has been cleared of forest and is now used for agriculture or urban development. The polar icecaps are shrinking and the desert areas are increasing. At night, the Earth is no longer dark, but large areas are lit up. All of this is evidence that human exploitation of the planet is reaching a critical limit. But human demands and expectations are ever-increasing. We cannot continue to pollute the atmosphere, poison the ocean and exhaust the land. There isn't any more available.
