This is another one of Ms. Menard's good films with Renae Morriseau. But it also shows how the racial problems were rampant back then towards Metis people as they still are today. When Velvet walked over to the boarding house, the sign "Only White Women Allowed" stood there in full view. This discouraged her from entering (and rightfully so) since I would have been mad as hell if I also saw something like that! This is also a sad story that made me cry toward the end because Velvet felt as if she left her mom too soon. Towards the end of the film she sings about how she left her mother and feels so bad about doing so. That final song's lyrics was all about that. I always cry whenever watching a sad film like this.
Anyway .... this film earns a 7 out of 10.
