Carl Packard and Eve Rediger are planning on killing Eve's wealthy older husband so that they can be together with his money. A former chorus girl, Eve had to sign a prenuptial agreement before Rediger married her, the reason divorce is not an option. Packard, Rediger's stockbroker, doesn't think Eve could withstand the scrutiny of police questioning after the murder, so he devises a Plan B so that they can have their cake and eat it too: with the help of one of his friends, Dan Pepperday, as the heavy, they stage a fake kidnapping so that they can get at least some of Rediger's money. What they are unaware of even before Packard suggests the kidnapping is that Rediger, upon his belief that Eve has run off in she probably no longer loving him if she ever did, has hired Jeff to locate her, and do so quietly, i.e. without any of their friends knowing that she has run off. With a few reliable tips and Roscoe's help, Jeff is able to locate her, not yet even knowing about the fake kidnapping. What may prove problematic for Jeff in this case is a combination of Rediger's pride which dictates his every action, and someone within this collective coming up with a Plan C he or she thinks is more palatable. Those problems, if unresolved, could result in Jeff and by association Stuart's careers going down the drain.
