What's life without teamwork
bkoganbing2 January 2014
Agatha Christie's Nick&Nora or better known to her readers as Tommy And Tuppence get hired by of all people the US Ambassador to Great Britain about a bag mix up going through customs. All he had in his bag was a pair of boots still it is a bit of an annoyance.

What starts out as a strictly minor league affair turns very major when Clive Merrison playing the ambassador's valet commits suicide by jumping off London Bridge into the Thames River.

Reece Dimsdale who plays the office assistant to Tommy And Tuppence gets in a bit of heroics in this story. He's a fan of western movies and his practicing on his lariat and he lassoes a villain holding a gun on James Warwick. Tom Mix couldn't have done it any better.

I do love that in this series the BBC kept it at the time it was written, the United Kingdom between the World Wars. Agatha Christie fans will appreciate that and this film.

A beautiful production, a curious mystery.

Britain's new U. S. Ambassador Randolph Wilmot hires Tommy and Tuppence to investigate a strange case, an incident that happened on the crossing, in which his bag was switched, his boots stolen.

It's a curious case, a very unusual mystery, I can't say that Tommy and Tuppence were my favourite of Christie's creations, but I've enjoyed the series, and in particular, I liked this case.

The story may seem small and inconsequential initially, but such is the cleverness of Christie's writing, that there's of course more going on than meets the eye. The case quickly turns into something a whole lot more interesting.

It's light viewing, there are a couple of laughs throughout, best of all perhaps being where Tuppence tries to outsmart Tommy, but the latter was a step or two ahead here.

It's a decadent looking episode, it's beautifully produced, a true feast for the eyes, the sets and costumes, it's beautifully well made.

I'm a big fan of T. P. McKenna, maybe his accent wasn't first class, but who cares. A nice cast, some well known faces, Clive Merrison, Norma West, and of course Catherine Schell.

Enjoyed that, 7/10.

The Ambassador's Boots

Partners in Crime has been an uneven series.

The Ambassador's Boots is more like it and if only more episodes showed a similar verve and sleuthing. It also is a sumptuous looking episode.

The American Ambassador had a mixed up with his bag as he arrived to Britain on a ship. He ended up leaving the ship with a similar bag with similar initials and only later the correct bag was delivered to him. The Ambassador's bag only contained his boots.

The Ambassador asks Tommy and Tuppence to look into it. Later the Ambassador's valet commits suicide.

Tommy thinks that there was no accidental mix up. He realises that the Ambassador's kitbag will not go through a custom inspection.

Tuppence has fun dancing the Charleston with the American Ambassador in a club. An early clue is given when a young lady collapses and it not for being drunk.

Albert gets to act out his cowboy fantasies when he lassos a henchman.

Tommy is shown to be more smart, cunning and resourceful here as he realises that he is walking to an obvious trap.
