"I'm still me, aren't I"

Warning: Spoilers
It would be a difficult task to come up with the most bizarre or unexplainable story in the 'One Step Beyond' universe, but this one has to rank right up there among them. Recovering from a scarlet fever coma, a twelve year old girl doesn't recognize her parents and suddenly sets out to another home across town to a couple who she recognizes as her own father and mother. Adding to the mystery is the sudden reversal of the purported mother's trance-like state following the drowning death of their own daughter. But when Helen Mason (Anna Lee) sees the young girl, she is newly convinced that her own real daughter has truly passed away. This is a role reversal story like no one you've ever encountered before.

Upon a medical doctor's advice, Laurie Warren (Reba Waters) stays with the Mason family, but soon after Mrs. Mason becomes pregnant and suddenly the veil of recognition is lifted and Laurie realizes she needs to go back to her own parents. The only explanation offered by series host John Newland is that the spirit of Alice Mason lived in Laurie Warren for this brief period of time. Perhaps an unsatisfactory answer for most, but how would you explain it?

Two Girls

Reba Waters stars as a young girl named Laurie who is confined to her bed, suffering from scarlet fever which may possibly kill her. Across town, another woman named Helen Mason is in a catatonic state after the tragic drowning death of her little girl Alice. When Laurie unexpectedly recovers from the fever, it is seemingly with the soul of Alice inside her, who is confused about her surroundings, and becomes determined to go home to her parents, which starts a chain reaction of events that will change both families forever... Intriguing episode makes fine use of its miraculous premise, leading to a satisfying resolution for all concerned.

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Warning: Spoilers
After the downing death of her daughter, poor Anna Lee (as Helen) seems "more dead than alive." Mostly, she just sits in a chair, with a blankly pained expression on her mute face. She won't even sob, and husband Philip Bourneuf (as Carl Mason) is told Ms. Lee will soon die from grief. Meanwhile, in a neighboring town, twelve-year-old Reba Waters (as Laurie) miraculously recovers from scarlet fever. But, upon awakening, she doesn't recognize parents Phyllis Hill and Ross Elliott (as Phyllis and George Warren). She exclaims, "Let me go!" and runs away to the Masons. Lee senses the return of her daughter and recovers; although, Ms. Waters doesn't look like the same girl. So, young Waters now has the mind of "Alice Mason" in the body of "Laurie Warren".

This suggests an interesting question - which family should get to keep Waters?
