"Alfred Hitchcock Presents" Enough Rope for Two (TV Episode 1957) Poster

Alfred Hitchcock: Self - Host

Quotes

  • Alfred Hitchcock : I feel that the cow has been very much overrated as a performer.

  • [afterword]

Alfred Hitchcock : [Hitchcock is still standing by the upright rope]  In case you are wondering what happened next, Madge Griffin was found by a uranium prospector. So our story had a happy ending. For the prospector, that is. You see er, he didn't find Madge for two years. However, you'll be glad to hear that the money was in an excellent state of preservation.

[Hitchcock looks up the rope again]

Alfred Hitchcock : Perhaps I'd better reel our little friend in. He'll catch cold if he stays up there too long.

[starts pulling rope down until the end of it appears, with a note tied to it; Hitchcock looks surprised]

    Alfred Hitchcock : He's left a note

    [reads note]

Alfred Hitchcock : "I just came to the end of my rope."

    [folds note]

Alfred Hitchcock : That, I'm sure, is enough mystery to last until next time when we return with another story. Now we come to that part of the program for which you have all been waiting. Good night.

  • [introduction]

Himself - Host : [Hitchcock is holding one end of a huge rope in his hands]  Good evening, television addicts. Thank you for your kind attention. Please don't jump to conclusions. We have not joined the stampede for Western stories. Tonight's story does take place in the far West, but it is not about cowboys and their playmates. I feel that the cow has been very much overrated as a performer. By way of further contrast, my portion of tonight's potpurri will have a definite Eastern flavor.

    [drops end of rope down]

Himself - Host : Now, for an amazing demonstration.

[looks down and mouths silent commands as the camera pulls out; Hitchcock claps his hands and we see the rest of the coil of rope rise up in the air to the sound of a slide whistle; as it stops and stands straight, Hitchcock looks briefly at the audience before gesturing to someone off-screen]

    Himself - Host : Charles?

[camera cuts to a snake charmer bowing to Hitchcock and follows him as he walks forward and climbs up the rope right out of frame; camera pulls in as Hitchcock looks up the rope before turning back to the audience]

Himself - Host : I can see that this is especially useful when you have a place you want to get away from, but no place you want to go to.

[Hitchcock looks up the rope again, then addresses the audience]

Himself - Host : He doesn't seem to be coming down; perhaps we better have our play. It will begin in a moment, and is called, "Enough Rope For Two". I hope you will appreciate how skilfully we have woven the theme throughout our introduction.
