A funny ghost story
sonnyschlaegel11 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The Tuckers are about to move. Richard is looking forward to it because he will have to spend less time commuting. His wife as well as their kids is a bit reluctant. She likes their house and she's convinced that the ghosts of the Chumskys, a couple that lived there earlier, are still there and acting as guardian angels for the family. When the Tuckers have gone, Tony, a producer of porn movies, moves in together with his brainless wife (and 'star' of his movies) Sheena. Things are not so bad at first, and even when it gets worse, the ghosts hesitate to frighten away their new fellow-lodgers: the ghosts must be careful, for if their house was destroyed in the conflict, they would have to stay in limbo forever, and their souls would never find rest. But Sheena's awful singing and Tony's intention to sell the Chumskys' jewellery (which is still in the attic) make the ghosts change their minds and take the risk. But driving away Tony and Sheena proves to be difficult...

The plot of this episode is quite simple. (It reminded me a bit of 'The Canterville Ghost'. When the ghosts try to frighten away Tony and Sheena, they are not frightened at first.) But there were some good points. I liked Robert Picardo (the holographic doctor on 'Star Trek: Voyager') as Tony, and the other actors are good, too. There were some funny scenes, for example when the ghosts comment on Tony and Sheena, saying they are too stupid to be frightened, when the ghosts eat burgers, or when Tony explains why he named his dog Sheena. And there's some black humour, when Tony is in the attic and comments on Mr Chumsky's bicycle accident. All in all I liked this episode.

A funny idea but the writing, as usual, is a bit too broad and cartoonish
planktonrules23 June 2015
When the show begins, a young couple is inexplicably moving from their wonderful home--and that is a weak point in the plot. The place is so perfect and they have NICE and helpful ghosts who have saved their lives--so why would they ever move?! Regardless, the folks who buy the place are awful--a porn star and her sociopathic jerk of s husband (Robert Picardo--sporting a toupee). The ghosts (Evelyn Keyes and Eddie Bracken) are aghast at how horrible their new tenants are and they decide that instead of being nice ghosts, they'll try to scare away these jerks. The problem, however, is that the ghosts really are awfully nice and don't have it in themselves to be THAT scary. Plus, the awful family are just too stupid to be scared!

This show is a lot like it was written for children--with cartoonish characters. While Bracken and Keyes were just fine in their roles as a sweet, elderly set of ghosts, the awful family was just too ridiculous and seemed like they were written by an 8 year-old! Had it been a bit more subtle, then it would have worked much, much better.

By the way, if all this seems familiar, it's pretty much the plot from "Beetlejuice". Enjoyable but as I said, it could have been better.

"We can't go through eternity like this!"

Warning: Spoilers
This is another Amazing Story that appears to go out of it's way to proceed on the silly side instead of a little subtlety to provide it's humor. A couple consisting of a porn star producer (Robert Picardo) and his dumb as a rock wife and star performer (Wendy Schaal), buy a nicely detailed suburban home, only to be told by the previous owners that the house is haunted. They remain nonplussed, dismissing the advice in favor of setting the home up as a recording studio. Aware of the the new tenants, the ghosts of the Chumsky's (Eddie Bracken and Evelyn Keyes) decide to throw a few scares at them in an effort to rid their home of the undesirables. They eventually get through to the dismissive couple, with definite hair raising results (at least in the case of Picardo's character)! The only puzzler with the story's conclusion is how and why the original Tucker family decided to return to their old neighborhood, especially when they had already purchased a new home about an hour away and close to Mr. Tucker's (Bruce Davison) job. I guess you're not supposed to think about stuff like that with one of these shows, but when you do, the logic kind of works against it.

Boo Hoo!
Hitchcoc24 May 2014
After revisiting this series after 28 years, I would rename it "Not So Amazing Stories." I don't mean to be condescending because the did hit the mark a few times, but many of the episodes were formulaic and, frankly, a bit tiresome. This is one of those undistinguished offerings that just doesn't do it for me. A nuclear family decides to sell their house so he doesn't have to commute an hour each way to and from work. They suspect that the house is haunted (and we are given evidence from the start that it is) and so the wife insists on letting the prospective buyers know what they are getting into. The buyers don't seem to care because he is a sleazy porn director (played by Robert Picardo, the holographic doctor on Star Trek Voyaer) and his slinky, vapid wife is his star. He wants to use the house as his studio for making his films. The sellers are immediately upset by what they have wrought. Now we cut to the attic which is the dwelling place of the ghosts. A nice couple, including the actor Eddie Bracken and his wife, who happen to be dead, enjoy their time their and have adopted the family as theirs. They are insulted by these new people as everything they do to drive them away just endears them to the place. Now it's time for a dramatic action. See what happens.

Boo To 'Boo!' Except To See Eddie & Evelyn Again
ccthemovieman-13 September 2007
This was one of the few episodes that offered very little. It's another ghost story and, frankly, Spielberg is overdoing it in that department. I prefer his other shows here, the straight drama or comedies. These are getting old. Speaking of old, that's what we have here: two old "ghosts" who have lived happily in this house and are not happy when the nice family moves. The new owner is a slimy porno movie guy and his ditsy girlfriend, who stars in the cheap films.

The ghosts do what they can do get rid of their unwanted guests, which sounds entertaining, and should have been....but wasn't. I did enjoy a few of the remarks, like the one Evelyn Keyes makes when she says, "These people are too stupid to be frightened." The porn dude's hairpiece wasn't bad, either. Why "rug" jokes usually work, I don't know, but they do.

It was good to see veteran actors Keyes and Eddie Bracken again. Evelyn is 91 years old and still going strong. Her birthday and mine are the same! Eddie passed away in 2002. They were both born in the mid 1910s.

Funny and clever little tale of old ghosts getting rid of a porn couple!
blanbrn15 May 2014
This "Amazing Stories" episode from season one titled simply "Boo!" is funny and neat a clever little story of surprise and spooks. It involves two old ghosts(the legends Eddie Bracken and Evelyn Keyes)who for years have haunted a California house, and all of a sudden the current couple decides to move out and relocate. Now guess what enter the new house occupants this couple happens to be a porno star and her movie making husband. And this couple really are really outrageous and open all the time about their bed time and love making they are really nasty people! The old ghosts will have none of this so it's time to rid the house of the porn couple and move back into the new house of the last departed couple. Overall funny and cute little story nothing really of a major memory though.
