This episode is another honorable mention in my book. Believe it or not this was actually the very first episode of the show I've every seen and it's definitely a very good place to start.

Not much to say it's a typical ghost story but what makes the tale stand out is in it's execution. I'll admit at the time that ghost I thought was really spooky, I wasn't sure whether her intentions were evil or not. However it was really the writing on the walls that spooked me out more reminds me a bit of that cryptic message from "The Shining", it's pretty much a message backward over and over again everywhere.

One of the other things that stand out about the episode is Laura Bertram whom I remember from the sci-fi show "Androminda" which is really cool since I like that show. I really like her character Amanda she's one that is intelligent, on the shy side, and she's really sympathetic because she wants to make friends and have a good time like anyone else. But the problem is most of the time she never can because of her cousin Beth whom is a b.... with a capital B; you can easily see Amanda can't stand her but is forced to put up with it despite how much crap Beth dishes out. This to me make you want Amanda to win all the more, to show Beth isn't the boss of her or anyone.

The reaction Amanda gives when she's in a dangerous situation I felt was genuine and felt like that's how anyone would react when helpless and powerless; her character was practically facing an entrapment situation where the ghost wasn't giving her a way out and she had next to nothing to defend herself with, as if she really can unless there's a proton pack; so yeah she was fraked.

However this episode has a slight twist at the end, I won't say what it is but lets just say you won't be less than satisfied.

Rating: 3 and a half stars

Another Scary Episode!
g-bodyl21 August 2013
The third episode, "The Tale of the Lonely Ghost" is not as scary or chilling as the second episode, but it still features plenty of chills. The acting is solid even though I found the cousin very annoying and bratty. I liked the ending because it's somewhat of a surprise and this episode is written well. Also, there is some good character development within the Midnight Society itself.

This episode is about a girl who is sent to live with her aunt and cousin for the summer. In order to hang out with her cousin and friends, she must spend the night in the haunted house next door.

Overall, this is a very good episode that is slightly less scary than the previous episode. However, the last two episodes are proving to be effective after a lackluster start. I rate this episode 9/10.

"You're a chicken and a snitch! I couldn't stand being you!!"
So like most episodes this one has a nice little setup that's established very quickly, with a sweet girl being forced to live with her aunt and horrible bratty cousin for a while and being so desperate for a few friends that she agrees to the ridiculous task of spending the entire night in the creepy old empty house next door, at least until she learns of the eerie secret that still resides within the place... Beth was such little creep, I didn't get why she couldn't just try and be nice and give her nervous cousin Amanda a break and not try to practically force her into staying in a strange and possibly dangerous empty house just for the sake of getting into her dumb little group of friends, as well as treat her poor miserable old nanny like dirt! Beth was actually pretty priceless though to be honest, as she does embody some of the more classically obnoxious teen aspects of the early 90s with her loud awful fashion sense, freaky hairdo, and obnoxiously bad attitude! To be fair the young actress's performance is probably the most fun and entertaining thing about this good but not exactly exceptional tale - she's totally the 'it' girl you love to hate! I'm glad that as the series went on they had the sense to drop the Midnight Society's little interludes, as they only served to disrupt the flow once the story got started. I'm also very glad they soon got rid of little Jacob Tierney as Eric, because to me he never quite fit in with the rest of the group and was mostly just kind of an irritating little twerp.. I always liked the ones that had a ghost child that turned out to be harmless and just in need of help at the end, and the silent imploring spirit girl in this one isn't evil at all and just wants to be reunited with her mother with a little help from the living, and there's a pretty moving resolution where the two finally do meet again as the mother crosses over into the afterlife where they are both move on, together again. It's the touching stuff like that as well as all the awesome spooky fun that makes me still love this show a lot. Before you know that she's not a bad ghost, the visual of the pale mute child residing in death on the other side of the mirror forever silently begging for help, by writing the word backwards all over the walls is creepy and impressive, as well as a neat little discreet nod to The Shining, I bet that one had a few kids scared of getting too close to their bedroom mirrors back in the day! Anyway although there are episodes that were better made and were much more satisfying than this one to me, it's a good early episode and the great thing with this show I've found is that, even when an episode is poor or average, it's still always so wonderfully fun and nostalgic just to watch that it takes me back a little bit to my childhood in a nice way every single time, no matter how old I get, and I think that may be part of the show's true legacy, good episode! X.

My favorite episode of the series.
TOMNEL1 August 2006
This was what this show was all about. An episode that is actually scary and an episode with heart. This episode is about a girl going to her mean cousin's house for the summer. To show she's cool, she has to go into the abandoned neighbor's house, where she discovers backwords writing on the wall in a room and a girl living in a mirror. This episode has some what of a surprise ending, and is executed so perfectly it is a brilliant addition to a brilliant kid's show that I'd love to be put into syndication. You can see this on a VHS copy of Snick (vol.1)

My rating: Perfect episode. 25 mins. TV Y7

Memories!!

This is indeed one of my favourite Are you afraid of the dark episodes. The actors for the most part are excellent and the casting choices were spot on. The story is also great. There's a few twists along the way that aren't really unpredictable but when you realize some of them or get to them for first viewing it gets you invested. What a great series for the 90s. This episode ranks up there with one of the bests out of the whole series

It's a great start to the 1st season. More great episodes are coming. Re-Watching the series for who knows. Lost count lol. 1st time reviewing episode by episode and loving it so far. Episode Highly recommended!

get through this episode to prove you're not a zeeb
davidmalaimo5 May 2020
Beth is the quintessential 90s character; the clothes, the lingo. "you need to prove that you're not a zeeb". "zeeb" will definitely be a part of my vocabulary from now on. honestly, beth is a pretty messed up human being. the way she speaks to her nanny is genuinely disturbing. and she rollerblades!

okay had to get that out there. the second episode is a very good episode. it has its scares and it has its tears. very 90s (they really don't make em like they used to) and genuinely spooky.

we also get a little steamy romance going on within the midnight society. i had forgotten that there were little side plots with them through out the series so i'll try to pay attention to those. let's hope it makes more sense than the x-files.
