"The real terror never begins until night falls..."
Ah the first ever vampire tale that they did, and it's actually really good, I remember loving it when I first ever watched it as a kid. The first thing I notice about the story now though, is how it borrows a pretty hefty page from the all time classic original movie Fright Night, with a couple of kids spying on their new neighbours moving in late one night and after noticing that the couple and what appears to be their little boy never seem to go out till it's after dark, that they have mysterious crated objects delivered to them that are just big enough to possibly make them coffins, and also that folks all over their neighbourhood start becoming weak and pale as they walk about with big bandages stuck over their necks, something which nobody except the young brother and sister seems to find strange..and the whole situation appears so obvious that they assume the supernatural worst, and as it ultimately turns out they're wrong but also right, just not in the way they were expecting! I love the twist at the end so much so that I decided I wouldn't spoil it on the off-chance that anybody reading might not have seen the episode yet. I like the entire episode, I find it a fun little engaging mystery to watch even if you do know how it ends, it does a good job of misdirecting the audience. And although the buildup's a little better than the payoff I do like how it's an ambiguously dark ending and not so much a 'happy' one. There something about the tone of these earlier episodes that's verging on the surreal at times, everyone acts so oddly and everything's so on-the-nose! And my how things have changed from a fashion standpoint! The boy dresses like a girl and the girl a boy. They never explain why the boy's name is "Dayday" or why he keeps the popcorn bowl on his head so long after his big sis dumps it on him! To their credit though the two young actors were among the more fun to watch sibling duo teams to appear on the show. I find it a little outrageous just how quickly two kids are fully prepared to murder their neighbours based on nothing but a big hunch! It's a show that was so brilliant at the portraying of shady and super-suspicious and eccentric weirdos, and the pair of oddball Russian/gypsy/Italian/goth types that featured in this one were certainly no exception. They were so funny, I loved their 'classic' accents. And that surely was a nod to the movie Salem's Lot in the scene where the girl has a nightmare that the male vampire flies through her window for a bite to eat! That smiling mother of theirs was far more disturbing than any creature of the night, and rude! She practically body-slams the elderly mailman to the ground and just says "I'm late!" and gets away with it! What a stinking excuse for an actress, she was only ever in this very episode and I'd seriously place her as the very worse actress to ever appear on the show and that's saying something. She comes off as a complete grinning moron, and why was she so eager to invite two strangers who were clearly so creepy and weird into her home? It's all her fault that her two children are very soon to be dead by the episode's end.(spoiler alert!) anywho like most of them it's simple and straightforward and very satisfying, it's another great episode of a terrific series that I hold very dear to my heart, I think the particular brand of magic that it commands holds up very well indeed. It's one of the cheesiest but also for me certainly one of the best shows ever. And I'll never forget it, ever! X

One of the best and creepiest episodes
ametaphysicalshark3 November 2008
It's always fun when I'm revisiting this as an adult and come across certain episodes which I remember most of the events from, this is one of them. The surprise ending to this was carved into my memory for life when I saw this as a kid, and for a show where the stories normally ended with all the loose ends tied-up neatly, most of the time even with an optimistic ending, this one came as a real shock to me. This is dark stuff. I mean, it ends foreshadowing the certain death of one of our 'good guys', and with a genuinely creepy and eerie twist as well. The impact this had on me has to have been the impact that watching a particularly good episode of "The Twilight Zone" would have had on a kid in the sixties.

So yeah, this is the one where the creepy Transylvanians (probably/possibly vamps) move in next door. Who doesn't remember this? I don't think I trusted Eastern Europeans for a while after seeing this.

10/10

The tale of the nightly neighbors

Warning: Spoilers
Ah!! Memories from childhood. This one is one of 2 that I will rate 10/10 for season 1.

The story is quite simple. A family moves from Transylvania to a remote little town where they can prey on unsuspecting victims. But there's more than meets the eye and twists. One I still remembered watching it again after a long time. It just sticks with you. The brother and sister duo sleuths I found amusing and really liked them. The nightly neighbors casting was fantastic for the episode. The vibe and everything was just perfect. For me his episode is a 10/10. It's a knockout. From start to finish your invested. Highly recommended!!

another quite boring episode!
michael_sharples_uk8 January 2007
the plot is a family move in next to dayday and they're from transilvania CLICHÉ!!!!!! and they never come out in the day so after this happens a few times his mate or brother or maybe even his sister tells them that they might be vampires and not to let them in as the only way a vampire can come in is if invited. so they go creep in the house and see a big fridge and they find loads of bottles of blood in there so they scarper out of there quick. then they come round and the parents invite them in and they say that they work for the hospital and they're looking after the surplus of blood (im presuming this is some sort of back alley hospital as who lets the staff take blood home!?) so all appears to be well and they are invited to dinner the next night. then the parents go home and wait for it..... they really are vampires! wow didn't see that coming did you! and the twist is the little boy is the master vampire and the parents have just got access to the neighbours house and its gonna be a feeding frenzy tomorrow! THE END now that was boring wasn't it, not a great story and the acting wasn't too good either,

Tale by: Betty Ann Phew, got vampires out of the way, or did we? you'll see. i probably enjoyed this as a kid, but vampires just don't do it for me anymore....or vampire vibes. nowadays i like a good original monster... or general creepiness...anything but vampires and werewolves. still, this was a fun episode that kept you guessing and had surprises so there ya go. i'll say though, this one and the last one, "captured souls", were the duds of this season so far, in my opinion. i'm sure we all have our favorites though from when we were younger and i'm sure not everyone dislikes vampires as much as i do. so take my disdain with a grain of salt.

still, i thought Betty Ann was better than this. she seems like she'd have a good style, so let's hope she redeems herself.

anyways, my biggest question is: how does the kid, who's wall is literally a giant map, not know where Ukraine is?
