The one that started it all
ln777231 March 2023
Like the title says. It's the one that started one of the best kids series ever to grace our television screens. Far from being the best episode. It was at least decent storyline and what made it watchable is the character of Dr Vink. There's a few riddles that make it fun to watch and try to figure out. The cab driver i found pretty good and did his part very well. Again a decent start to an excellent series

Like a lot of reviews here. The Casting for the kids actors could have been better but it was still not bad. Watching them all over again so will review episode by episode as free time is had! 6/10 The Phantom Cab.

"Grab my hand!" "I can't reach!" "Grab it you turd!!"

Warning: Spoilers
The tale that started it all... Two brothers, who I'm sure anyone could totally buy as brothers, the older one being a bit of a bully who constantly hurls hilarious insults at his younger brother, a thoroughly irritating perky little brat with a horrible nasally-sounding voice and who's acting is so dang poor it could've threatened the burgeoning future of the show if it wasn't so funny, are hiking in some woods and find themselves lost. They soon encounter a strange middle-aged laughing man in the dark named Flin who rather cryptically guides them to the shady shack dwelling of a scarily eccentric and slightly sinister giant of a man named Dr Vink who blackmails them into engaging in tricky riddle word games, and after he gives them one that's a little too hard to solve quickly and takes the craziness up a notch by demanding they give him a hand(!), the boys give the first ever iconic screaming into the camera shot of the series, and flee back into the woods where they again encounter Flin who says he's there to give them a ride home, and while doing so and yakking away at them, he spins his head all the way around and reveals that he's been dead for forty years and is cursed to repeat the accident that killed him every night along with whoever happens to be in his cab until someone can solve the wicked doctor's nefarious riddle.. It's pretty bizarre! I just seriously wanna slap that little idiot silly when he decides to repeat the entire riddle again instead of just saying the answer immediately as the cab is about to crash into the tree! The head-spinning is the one good scare that every episode had somewhere and it's a real laugh out loud moment as well and is kind of what made the show so great! There's loads of great cheesy exaggerated 90s lines flying left and right! Being the first episode it's shaky and they hadn't quite got the balance of the cheese factor right just yet, as far as this one goes it's pretty much off the scale! I poke fun but that tends to be a part of how you love this show. Watching it now it really takes me back a little to when I was a kid watching this for the first time and loving it, there's a lot of nostalgia attached to it for me. It's like watching a tiny piece of my childhood and a reminder of more innocent happy times. It's a show that wasn't really about acting or even how scary it was, it was all about the fun, the stereotypes and over the top acting and situations always had a playful feeling and a sense of adventure, and you can even see here why the show was such a long-lasting hit with kids and deservedly went on for seven wonderful seasons. So this inaugural take isn't all that great but it was a good way to begin the series and I submit to you, fellow fans, Are You Afraid of the Dark... He kinda died!

Great Story But Weak Acting!
g-bodyl11 August 2013
I remember when I was a young kid watching this show every week on Nick. It's creepy, but it never gets gory or terribly frightening. I think this is fun family entertainment and the stories told around the campfire are on par with my family used to tell around the campfire. This is the pilot episode and is called, "The Tale of the Phantom Cab." This is a good start since it's effectively creepy and has a great story. However, the acting is horrid.

This episode is about two brothers who get lost in the woods and they end up at a mysterious doctor named Vink. He tells them they are not allowed to leave until they correctly answer his riddles.

As I mentioned before, the acting is dreadful. Not the Midnight Society gang, but the actors in the story. I'm keeping in mind this is a children's show, but the acting is overblown and made me really despise the kids.

Overall, this is a good pilot show thanks to the story. But it could have been way better if they had a better cast. Luckily, the best is yet to come. I rate this episode 7/10.

suspenseful silly pilot
davidmalaimo4 May 2020
I figured i'd watch this show all over again and review it to keep my place. i like this episode. a lot of people mention that it's not a great pilot for what would be a great series, so if it does indeed get better then that will be pretty cool. sometimes these shows just don't seem the way they were when you were younger, but i'm pretty good at putting my kid glasses on and letting myself sink back into the good ol' days. i honestly did not know where this episode was going which is pretty cool. dr. vink is pretty creepy and we'll meet him some more so that's neat good. also, it is the first story from a new member of the midnight society so it makes sense the tale would be somewhat shaky, but i'm sure that wasn't a plot point that the writers were thinking: "make sure the story isn't THAT good because it is a new members story so it wouldn't be believable if it was the scariest story ever".

The ride into this great series begins!
patrickfilbeck4 October 2021
This first Episode of one of the best Horror-Series aimed at kids (and, to be honest, all ages) isn't one of the very creepy Storys, but it's a very good start into this project. Darkness, Riddles, Ghosts and Ghouls are part of it. It's charming and has suspense. The acting isn't that bad for a series like this, the idea is a fitting short one, the cinematography classic and the set design is fun.

Phantom Uber

Fun creepy episode from the legendary AYAOTD.

It's about some kids getting lost in the woods after they take a ride in a taxi.

The production was absolutely amazing for its time. It has the 90s corniness, and that's why AYAOTD was a legend on YTV.

Last Words: Fun times. Fun episode.

A solid pilot marred by the worst acting of the series.
TOMNEL17 June 2009
As is true with almost all anthology shows, "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" is a mixed bag as to how good the story actually is. Most of the time, the show had great episodes, and this one is no exception. The story is fine, the characters are interesting enough (despite being somewhat clichéd), and the writing isn't bad, but...this acting is horrible. This episode features the worst acting to ever grace this series, or possibly even Nickelodeon, and that's a hard thing to have happen, as Nickelodeon has had a plethora of horribly acted series. The acting is that bad.

Tough guy Denny (the very popular Jason Tremblay) and his younger brother Buzz (Sean Ryan) are lost in the woods for some reason. They find a cab driver who tells them about a house where a man can help them find what they want. They meet Dr. Vink (Aaron Tager in his first appearance of the character), and he gives them a riddle. The answer to this riddle ends up being what they need when they are riding in a phantom cab headed straight for a tree.

This acting is so bad! Jason Tremblay's performance as the older brother is very bad. He gives the clichéd "I'm gonna pound you." bully type readings, and this is how every line is said. Even worse than him is Sean Ryan as Buzz. His acting is equivalent to that in cult classic "Silent Night Deadly Night 2". His acting is so unbelievably bad you have to hear and see it to believe it. The only redeeming actor in the mix is Aaron Tager as Dr. Vink, and he's always good as the creepy old man. But everyone else is just so horrible, it's the acting equivalent of a painful enema.

This is not a bad episode, but it certainly is weak for a pilot. Maybe with a recast it could've been good, but it didn't have one and it isn't.

My rating: ** out of ****. 30 mins. TVY7

A weak pilot to a memorable TV series
leslie_rulz0829 October 2010
PLOT: Two brothers get lost in the woods. They find help when they run into a man who leads them into the hands of Dr. Vink. The strange, old man (Dr. Vink) makes a deal with the brothers: If they can solve his riddle; they can phone home. If they can't solve his riddle...God help them!

REVIEW: Like the direction, like the script, the story is a perfect example of a typical (Are You Afraid of the Dark?) ghost tale. But that's not saying much...Cast: the casting is TERRIBLE, just like the acting. An example of the terrible acting in "The Tale of the Phantom Cab" would be the shots of the siblings scream. These shots are pretty unconvincing even for child actors. Fortunately, the child actors are the only problem in "TTotPC." Unfortunately, the child actors play the main characters in "TTotPC." Luckily, Aron Tager does a fine job with his "Dr. Vink" character. The character of Dr. Vink is one of the highlights of the episode, by the way.

FINAL STATEMENT(S): "TTotPC" is definitely a weak pilot to a memorable TV series but the episode, despite the acting/casting & despite the fact that it has C-A-M-P written all over it, is, in itself, an entertaining fun-fest. OK, "an entertaining fun-fest" maybe a stretch, but come on; we're talking about "AYAotD?"...we're talking about a children's show.

TRVIA: All-male cast (excluding scenes featuring "The Midnight Society").

RATING: 2 out of 5 stars.

Riddles.
callanvass31 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The Crocker brothers, Denny & Buzz. get lost in the woods. They get sent to a cottage by a mysterious man by the name of Flynn. He vanishes and an eccentric doctor Dr. Vink resides in the cottage. They come across a phantom Cab Driver that promises to kill them in a crash if they can't solve the riddle. The Crocker's must solve the riddle before it is too late. I loved this show as a kid. I'm sure it is still a great show, but it's off to an inauspicious start. It wasn't that this episode was horrible, just underwhelming. It keeps your attention throughout for the most part, but doesn't do anything overly exciting with the plot. The acting is absolutely horrendous and amateurish like you wouldn't believe. It doesn't help that Buzz (The older brother) is completely asinine and abrasive towards his younger brother. I did like the clever reference to Friday The 13th (A maniac killer in a hockey mask that will slash us) It especially drags when we get to Dr. Vanik's part. The ending is somewhat clever, but it was a little too late. I didn't mind it, but it was rather sluggish and disappointing.

Additional Note: Rachel Blanchard appears a storyteller around the campfire. She would do 26 episodes

A weak Entry
rohanumpleby-3405715 November 2023
This episode kick starts the old siries. I've watched the first 4 episodes so far, where you can find this show free on YouTube. And if you loved this show growing up as a kid, I'm sure you'll still love it as an adult sharing the same experiences as a child. I'm a bit too young, but I can still say I am very much enjoying this siries. And that's largely down to the concept which is very well thought out, a group of kids telling scary stories next to the fire in the dark. And also them all taking turns in telling a scary story baste on experiences and general horror themes. But I also love the mystery surrounding the siries, so far which has kept up dramatically well. And the premise is simple and easy to follow, and not being too far fetched. And with it's smart and clever premise, will lead to endless possibilities and a long running show, which we sort of got here. But, much with the success of Episodes 2-4, the same cannot be said for it's aired pilot.

Buzz keeps reminding his brother is a jerk, and thanks we guessed the first time. And that's because the boys got lossed and his younger brother was holding the map, and the compass. And they needed to find a town, but they were cold, whiny and lost. They kept bickering with each other, and not much else in the story really happened. Until they see a person, when all hope was lost, they gained some of it back. Flynn comes to see the boys, and knows exactly the right place for them to go.

They go to Dr. Vink's labatory. He's a bizarre and rather weird scientist, that loves riddles. Denney trying to prove his brother wrong by trying to guess a riddle. Ounce they've solved it, they get help. Unfortunately things turn for the worst when they find out they haven't gotten it right, and now have to survive the dark, cold night alone. But they then see a cab, and hope isn't lost yet. They hop in, and it's Flynn who's driving, but can these boys brake the curse before it's too late, before they are dead meat, ofcourse they can. Denney being very good at riddles meant they could brake the curse, from 20 years ago. It all feels a bit familiar in terms of it's premise, but all in all not bad. Now time for my verdict.

Verdict,

5/10 Weak Entry, Character writing could've been better, but definitely is cheesy fun.
