According to creator, DJ MacHale, this was the first episode he ever wrote and pitched to Nickelodeon. It was inspired by an urban legend he had heard growing up in his home town.
The scene when Judy instantly changes into her prom gown the song "In the still of the night" by Fred Parris and the Five Satins was originally played in the background off and on until the end of the story. However on new boxset releases the song has been edited out, for most likely copyright reasons.

The tale that has been told many times that Kristen says she is telling the true version of is the Vanishing Hitchhiker story. This one was also inspired by the legend of Resurrection Mary, who supposedly haunts Resurrection Cemetery outside of Chicago.
