Warning don't read unless seen episode.
This was one of the first episodes of "Are You Afraid of the Dark" it was also one of the first ones I say, it's still pretty good if not great in my book. This is basically another reimagined version of "The Monkey's Paw" tale which has had countless versions throughout the years. I wouldn't say this is my favorite version of it per say, let alone one of my favorite episodes but it's good all the same.
My only problem with the episode is the character Kevin whom is just a total douche bag from beginning to end. It's hard for me to buy why the hell the character Dougie is friends with this guy, Kevin really isn't that nice to him; heck there was one moment when he wished his folks were gone, why the heck didn't Dougie punch Kevin at that moment he got the news, ok in Kevin's defense it was unintentional but still that was a step over the line. I just feel like may 'be Dougie likes being friends with him because Kevin seems like one of the cool kids; news from reality just because you hang with someone that seems cool doesn't necessarily mean they are.
Though may 'be that's part of the point of the story as Kevin is obviously a bad influence for Dougie and he's a person that's on the selfish end of things where Dougie isn't he has a conscious he really did feel bad about the prank they played on the witch which went too far and he seems smart but he seems to have some low self esteem no thanks to his so called friend whom you see peer pressures him a little on the wrong path. Which all the more makes us hope Dougie will step up and do what is right.
The suspense is solid, it just has this building tension as you know things are slowly but surely going from bad to worse. I really like how the wishing is handled, whatever wish they make there is an evil consequence to make it come true. From a street gang that tries to steal and attack Dougie and Kevin, they looked like a gang from "The Purge" movies as they have those really creepy masks on; I'll admit that scene I found unsettling as it really hits maybe a little too close to home as things like that actually do happen. Though a scene that really unsettled me was in the track scene with the mysterious black dog that comes out to sabatosh a champions runners efforts, I was afraid may'be that dog was going to attack or even kill that lead runner, it probably would of; that unsettled me because I have a bit of a phobia on dogs; but I liked how that was handled with the slow motion and that little bit of inhuman laughter the occurred it really gave the sense like you were in a nightmare.
Other than having the typical moral of being careful what you wish for, I feel the real more is about taking responsibility for your actions. If both Kevin and Dougie (well Dougie really wanted to apologize but as I said before he was being peer pressured) confessed and apologized they wouldn't be in the mess their in. It just shows how not owning up to your own mistakes just makes things worse because you end up making even more mistakes than before.
So, make your wish but beware you never know how you'll get it.
