A jealous husband who is NOT particularly adept at murdering the right person!
planktonrules7 July 2021
When the story begins, a very jealous husband (Carl Betz) confronts a guy on a yacht. The husband insists that the man is having an affair with his wife (Linda Day George) and the man denies it....because he is NOT. But the husband insists there is an affair and after the yachter refuses a bribe to stop seeing the wife, the jealous guy beats him to death! Then, he takes the body off shore to dispose of him. Soon the dead man's sister hires Barnaby to find the brother. But what about the guy who IS having the affair with the wife? And, what will the husband do when he realizes his mistake?

This is a pretty good episode...and Betz made an excellent villain. I disagree with the other review...and could see that as a private eye, you see a lot of terrible things and you can't take time to censure people who are committing adultery...especially when most of your cases involve murder. Well worth seeing.

Good show with a lousy ending.

Since the wife "loves" the guy who she is cheating with, Barnaby Jones wishes them well? Sure, the husband is portrayed as vengeful and cold, but what man wouldn't be angry when his wife is playing around? Nice laboratory techniques used by Barnaby to solve the crime; lots of action, beautiful scenery, and good co-stars in this episode. But sanctioning adultery doesn't say much for the character of Barnaby Jones. Dinged it 3 stars.

ENOUGH SUSPICION AND ROPE TO HANG THE GUY!

Some nice twists in this super story written by Robert W. Lenski, who was very much in demand on tv at the time. He wrote 16 episodes for BARNABY JONES, also many episodes for CANNON and MANNIX. To his credit, he wrote one of the best tv movies of all time, WHO IS THE BLACK DAHLIA (1975), which may have actually shed some new light on Hollywood's strangest murder case.

Tall, dark and menacing Carl Betz is perfect playing Marshall Briggs, who confronts a man he is certain is having an affair with his lovely, young wife, best played by Lynda Day George. The man denies everything, which only infuriates Briggs so he kills him. Done deal, and nobody is any the wiser, right?

But what happens if the victim was innocent, and there is yet another guy hanging around his wife?

Don't you love this stuff, and Lenski spins a really neat yarn here that will keep your attention.

Barnaby also makes use of his trusty laboratory once again. The whole idea may have been inspired by forensics used on HAWAII FIVE O, lead by Steve McGarrett, although Buddy Ebsen said in interviews there was an element and charm of CHARLIE CHAN at work here.

Only one debit. When Barnaby enters the house with the victim locked in the garage, Marshall clearly shoots at him and should have got Barnaby in the back. It is that CLOSE. What a lucky break!

Well worth staying up late for, especially for Carl Betz's over the top performance. SEASON 2 EPISODE 9 remastered CBS dvd box set.
