True, this story is rather similar to a more recent episode, however there are two dynamic actors who you do not want to miss. A lot of credit goes to director Leslie H. Martinson.

It's all about an embezzlement scheme, involving women connected to a feminist organization who are being bilked by the kindly, understanding operators, none other than Bradford Dillman (as Travis) and lovely Marj Dusay, playing Sylvia Blake.

These two make a diabolical couple in more ways than one, and play their respective roles incredibly well. It is so entertaining, especially Dillman, who defines the gentleman villain. Good support from popular actress Patricia Smith, a familiar face on many tv shows, both comedy and dramas.

One debit, and I agree with the last reviewer. The victim should have thought twice before confronting Travis all alone! And that was back in the day where there were no hidden cameras or high tech surveillence as there is today. Had that scene been written for tv now, it would have made more sense. Evidence! Either way, it's long shot.

This was written by Lou Shaw, and to his credit he wrote for several cop shows and later was the creator of QUINCY. Director Leslie H. Martinson does a super job with the cast, who also handled many episodes for MANNIX.

Lee Meriwether has a rather flashy role, getting all dressed up to fake out the bad guys. That's fun, and in a way, in the tradition of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

From SEASON 3 EPISODE 21 remastered CBS dvd box set.

So, you discover some guy is a criminal and you confront him privately?! That sure makes sense!!!

The overuse of a bad cliche AND the replication of a plot element from the previous episode make this an annoying and flawed episode.

When the episode begins, something ridiculous occurs...something ridiculous and overused in detective shows. A guy suspects that Robert Travis (Bradford Dillman) is a crook. But instead of going to the police or district attorney, he confronts Travis...alone and with no witnesses. And, during this confrontation, he announces that he's going to see the guy in prison! What a shock (NOT!!!) when Travis kills him, huh?!

The dead man's widow suspects that her husband's death was NOT the accident it was staged as being. The trail leads to a center that specializes in classes on investing for women....and it appears as if Travis is fleecing a LOT of women...and the woman in charge is his ready and willing accomplice. To prove it, Betty goes under cover.

In addition to the bad cliche, the show also features a murder where the victims gem falls off...which is EXACTLY what happened in the previous episode! These two things take a good idea for an episode and sink it to mediocrity at best.

Yet Another Formulaic and Predictable Plot
WYAdams10 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Once again the writers pulled out their tired overly used plot outline and checked off all the boxes. Sure enough, a murder followed by a second murder to cover up the first. Once again we have the inevitable and predictable shootout where the bad guy just misses Barnaby and he manages to make a perfect shot wounding the bad guy. So predictable!

They didn't forget to include Barnaby's miraculous insight that leads him directly to the bad guy based on nothing. This time it was based on the fact that the victim was allergic to caulk, but showed no signs of allergic reaction before his death. The flawed and contrived conclusion was that he couldn't have been caulking the boat so he had no reason to be under it. The reason it is contrived is that there may have been numerous reasons he was under the boat, caulking is not the only job that may have been needed. However, the writers needed some excuse to make Barnaby suspicious. And as ususl he jumps right to murder.

The only high point was Lee Meriwether dressed up as a beautiful, sexy and sophistcated client, beyond that, this was another predictable formulaic episode indistiguishable from dozens of others.
