A sad catatonic state
bkoganbing24 May 2016
Eileen Baral became the second little girl that the Cartwrights found wandering after a tragedy. There's A Christmas episode at the beginning of the run of the show where they find blind little Diane Mountford in the Sierras. But Baral is found by Hoss and and it's after a stagecoach holdup where everyone including here parents are killed except here.

She's in a sad catatonic state, but Dan Blocker brings her to the Ponderosa main house to stay temporarily. But as Lorne Greene points out the Ponderosa man cave is no place for a little girl. Still she does bond with Blocker, the big guy certainly did have a way with kids throughout the run of the series.

There's skulduggery afoot however engineered by her uncle Gerald Mohr in from San Francisco to claim her. What it is I won't reveal, but it was worth a lot of bloodshed in Mohr's eyes.

One of Dan Blocker's best episodes from the series.

the little child brings out the meanest and tenderest part of Hoss.

In this unforgettable episode, Hoss is strongly touched by a little girl he happens to find in a open area in the woods after he notices a wagon turned over;the girl is safe after the accident but her parents are killed. He seems almost obsessed with taking care of the little girl after he brings her home, Gerald Mohr plays one of the in-laws of the little girl's late mother. One day when the girl and Hoss go on a picnic, the little girl is abducted by Mohr's henchmen. To cut through a lot, Hoss finds Moore, knocks him on the ground at least three times.

Though the story has a happy resolution, it can bring a person to tears when you see that Hoss can't handle the girl leaving.

It is a sweet story, but the ending is definitely bittersweet.

Eileen Baral appreciation

I pretty much figured I'd enjoy this episode because I've seen Eileen on episodes of "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" and "Wagon Train" and she did a superb job on both episodes. She had a LOT of lines on that Alfred Hitchcock episode and it amazed me such a young child could handle that much material.

This episode was pretty much a polar opposite in terms of the Alfred Hitchcock episode I'm mentioning. Eileen's character is in shock because her parents have been killed. She's silent for a large part of the episode but eventually starts talking to Hoss since he's the one taking up time with her and she also ends up being able to talk to Joe and Ben.

This truly was a very sweet episode to watch and one kinda wishes that Eileen's character had stayed around because she played well off Dan Blocker. I looked Eileen up on imdb and it surprises me she didn't do much acting. I truly hope it was her decision to walk away from Hollywood instead of Hollywood forcing her out because she didn't fit the "cuteness" factor they were looking for. Hollywood has spit quite a few people out once they grew into teenagers and didn't have that IT factor anymore.

Whose looking for blue eyes?

Evil men who will stop at nothing to obtain little Lisa's dolly. Even if it means kidnapping her and threatening bodily harm! The evil men do ( women too) to get what they want or think they need.

Hoss comes across the stage wreck finding a little girl alone with her dolly. Her family is dead, she stares without speaking. Ever the gentle patient man hoss takes her home. Through tender loving care the cartwright help little girl to trust and speak. Tragic reflections cause Lisa great upset. Ben and the boys piece it together after she tells them about the two men in the barn. Through kidnappings, threats and the loss of her raggedy doll the real threat is the one who claims to be uncle comes to take her away. Hoss is listening to the conversation by the barn hears little Lisa not wanting to leave with uncle. As it turns out hoss followed them (thank god) not going the right direction. Uncle takes her to the wreck and starts interrogating her demanding the doll , hoss gets there and beats the .... out of him and gets her back to the ponderosa. There they discover the note inside the doll telling where to get in touch with her aunt. Lisa said her mother told her not to tell no one. Hoss wanted to keep Lisa home with all of them always. The little blonde girl with cornflower blue eyes steals your heart.

I was ten years old when I first saw this I loved it so much. Dan blocker wasn't acting he was himself. A great tragedy for all the world when he sadly passed away.
