Not Perfect Yet Plenty of Warmth

Dan Blocker needs help from a doctor (DeForest Kelly) sentenced for murder by a vengeful John Hoyt as judge. Similar story was done in a Virginian episode 8 years later. This episode is almost over plotted. Still a good cast helps make it work. Brings to mind John Ford and John Huston movies. Also the reflection on love calls to mind Wallace Berry movies. Lorne Greene is excellent.

DeForest Kelly's big guest-starring role on Bonanza--READ!!!!

Warning: Spoilers
He plays a doctor who is being set to be hung by the neck for killing a man in a fight. At the same time Hoss needs a doctor to operate on his lung after a horse fell on him. Dr. McCoy to the rescue! Ben gets as involved with the doctor's (and the latter's wife's) problems as much as he does Hoss's bad injury. Ben learns a big, illegal secret about the physician couple and he helps them get back together while saving Hoss all at the same time. This superb ep is another testament to Ben's true greatness as a character (see my reviews). In the top 5 Bonanza eps to be sure! Anywhere in there!

Justice, truth and mercy

Dan Blocker gets seriously injured while he and Lorne Greene are away on a trip. But when Greene seeks the town doctor he finds DeForest Kelley in jail awaiting a date on the scaffold.

Kelley is charged with the murder of the local city editor of the paper. The two have history from way back in Pennsylvania where the deceased also had some history with Kelley's wife Lizabeth Hush.

Very much standing in the way of justice, truth, and mercy is the judge who really has it in for Kelley is Judge John Hoyt.

We learn all in the end, but Ben Cartwright's real concern is saving his son.

Fine performances from the guest cast in this episode.
