Romance and miscegenation
bkoganbing26 March 2020
After a dozen seasons in the semi-recurring role of Hop Sing the Cartwright cook, Victor Sen Yung gets an episode of his own to star in.

On a vacation from the Ponderosa kitchen Hop Sing goes on a prospecting trip and finds a bit of gold, but also a mountain girl Kelly Jean Peters who hasn't seen much of the outside world.

Sadly miscegenation laws were in affect then and it would take another century before they were done away with in the USA. There's no future for this star crossed couple any more than there was for those Montague and Capulet kids.

Nice strong performances from Victor Sen Yung and Kelly Jean Peters.

Even the Cartwight's cook has problems with women

Warning: Spoilers
In an episode that features Hop Sing, it appears that even the Cartwright's cook cannot find love in the wide open west. Just like all the Cartwrights before him, Hop Sing takes a vacation and ends up making friends with a seemingly homeless woman that arrives at his camp. The woman for the most part is called Missy and ends up falling in love with the Asian cook. But like so many episodes in the past, the centered figure is not going to find happiness by the end of the show.

Everything seems to be going so well until Hop Sing gets engaged to the white female. Then because of an existing law, it is forbidden for a foreign man to marry a white woman. And like all the others in the cast, the curse of the women raises its head and crushes the heart of a character in the series.

The best thing about the episode is that Victor Sen Yung (Hop Sing) finally got a lead role in the series and was actually very good in the role. The bad thing is that it is another rotation plot that has been written for everyone in the cast. It was nice to see Mr Sen Yung in the role but was hoping for better story instead of a rehashed plot. I was excited about the acting only wish that the role would have been a better written script.

reflective of the times

Warning: Spoilers
Hop Sing goes off on vacation to pan for gold. A mysterious white woman shows up. Initially she does not talk, so you think she's a deaf mute. Wait she does talk but she does not know what an ocean is, OK, she is slow. Apparently she is a runaway but her origin is never revealed. Of course she must be damaged want to marry a "coolie"

Astoundingly they portray Hop Sing as a child like creature who is also slow because he has been living in America for decades and just discovered racism when he goes into town to get a marriage license.

Of course the two characters never express any affection on screen other than a desire to marry. They do not hug, kiss or mention the word love.

It hard to believe the actor who played Hop Sing was the wise cracking villian in Across the Pacific.
