Bear, Bones and Booth
ctomvelu-123 December 2008
B and B travel to the state of Washington to find out why a human hand and some arm fragments have turned up in the stomach of a dead black bear. Along the way, they uncover evidence of human sacrifice and possibly even ritualistic cannibalism in the deep woods. Bones attracts more than her share of attention from several local he-men, and actually accompanies Booth for some dancing and drinking at a local bar -- where she runs into those very he-men. The culprit is too soon figured out, unfortunately, but it is a fun episode in its grisly way. Brennan is still growing, or grating, on Booth in this early episode. And back at the lab, the boys are competing for the attention of the new overnight delivery gal, who is a real knockout. When push comes to shove, not surprisingly they are in for a bit of a surprise.

Not Hard to Bear!
Hitchcoc6 January 2023
This episode begins the tongue in cheek stuff that will go on for many seasons. I'll say it again, it could do without the juvenile sex talk that goes on in the lab. Jack is really tiresome at this point. This is true of Angela as well. They are incredibly competent at their jobs; why do they have so much teenage balony going on. For the first time Booth and Brennan are clicking. She still drives him nuts but their sparring is much more entertaining. The plot, of course, involves a bear that has consumed a human arm. It takes place in a small town in Washington state. There is some fear that cannibalism is a motive but it gets rather complicated. Very enjoyable episode.

Bones still developing
mitchrmp9 July 2016
We are still waiting for the character of Bones to fully emerge. The writer's are taking their time, but eventually the Bones we all know and love will emerge. She's not clearly defined on her spiritual beliefs or on her being a vegetarian, but soon we'll see those emerge.

Booth and Brennan work well together on everything. The last episode, I felt he hated her, but their chemistry seems to be back on track here. The cannibal element will play a big part in Season 3 in a pretty wicked way, so watch out for it...

After watching 11 seasons of Bones, it's interesting to see how young they all are. Love when characters are more fully developed.

Eastern! Washington?

Warning: Spoilers
One of the better early episodes - both Brennan and Both seem comfortable in their skins but the writers are just a little shaky about what to do with those skins. For example, how hard to emphasis Brennan's sexuality, a recurring problem almost up to the point when Brennan and Both finally give in to their mutual attraction.

To be fair, the writers occasionally have fun with this issue, like the episode where Brennan tries to juggle two 'boyfriends' and loses both, but more often they fall flat, flailing between one-night stands and serial monogamy. They don't do much better with Both - introducing attractive characters only to have them disappear when the 'relationships' fail, leaving a void that is very much felt for an episode or two.

The only real issue I have with this episode, apart from Brennan jumping into bed with Charlie (and her wardrobe), is geographic continuity: the Flathead are a Western Montana tribe with the western border of their reservation abutting the eastern border of Idaho. No Washington State in the picture. And I've got to wonder where the episode was really shot, the terrain doesn't match either the Rockies or their foothills(Eastern Washington). It is reminiscent of the Cascades (both Washington and Oregon versions) and their southern extension, the North California Sierras. Small point but very confusing - are Brennan and Both in Northwestern Washington, Oregon, California or Western Montana?

Back to sexuality - the FedEx courier is really hot, by herself, and the scene where she chooses to deliver her 'package' to Angela must have had a ton of adolescent males reaching for handkerchiefs with one hand and something else with the other.

Great stuff
Lythas_854 April 2021
Revisiting the first episodes over a decade.. the chemistry between the two is awesome and from the start they were jealous of each other.. too bad Booth's gf disappeared after that episode she was featured.

Bones:The Man in the Bear
Scarecrow-8820 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Morbid, dark-humored episode of Bones about the findings of cannibalism when a hand is discovered in the belly of a dead bear killed by a poacher for its gallbladder. Booth and Bones head to Washington State where a small town could house a cannibal who uses an old Indian ritual in a perverse ceremony, having killed two people, one for his arm, another for her heart. The two victims were a hiker and out-of-towner wanting to be a park ranger. KD Aubert is Toni, a courier both Zack and Hodgins are competing over. Tom Kiesche is the Washington town's sheriff, Steve Reevis as Indian Park Ranger Sherman Rivers, Marguerite MacIntyre as the veterinarian Dr. Denise Randall, Alex Carter(of CSI)as the local doc, Rigby, and Rusty Joiner as Charlie, the Post Office guy interested in Brennan(and known as someone well versed in hiking). The different location does get us out of the Jeffersonian a bit, and we see Angela skillfully link markings on a small piece of skin found in scat to a specific tattoo which leads to the identity of the poor fellow whose arm was eaten by the black bear. Dr. Goodman is acknowledged as an authority in Native American philosophies and customs so his expertise comes in handy when Booth and Brennan need information on a "wheel"(made of stones) found in the woods. Bones is quite popular among the men of the town who aren't accustomed to many beautiful women(the vet "gets around" since boredom around their parts sets in rather easily).

Confused about the killer
lemurlou26 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand why the veterinarian isn't the killer? She's not a vet. She can't be. No veterinarian, no matter how drunk they were, would use the word autopsy instead of necropsy. I even went back to watch the scene again, thinking maybe I misheard. So, from that scene on, I assumed she was the killer, or at least that there was something off about her, yet they never explained what. I was so confused by the end that I couldn't enjoy this episode.
