BONEY – Boney and the Kelly Gang - 1973

This Australian Police series ran during 1972-73. There were 26 episodes produced. James Laurenson headlines as mixed blood aborigine Police Inspector with the unlikely name of Bonaparte. He is assigned to all the strange cases where the local small town cops are in over their heads. These cases normally involve plenty of undercover work before he rounds up the villains.

In this episode, a tour bus driving through the countryside is stopped by a trio of armed men. Two of the men are dressed up like the bush ranger gang of Ned Kelly. They relieve the tourists of their cash and luggage before disabling the bus. They also grab one of the women tourists as a hostage.

The crooks, Jack Thompson, Kevin Wilson and Brian Hinzelwood take the goods and the blindfolded hostage and head into the bush. The local cop, Ken Goodlet, gets on the phone to headquarters. They quickly dispatch an inspector, Kate Fitzpatrick, to help.

Inspector Fitzpatrick realizes that she needs help and calls on fellow detective Laurenson. Laurenson quickly decides that the crooks are most likely locals. Search parties soon find the hostage unharmed. The cops figure she was dropped off up country, in-order to fool the Police as to which direction they were heading.

Laurenson soon goes undercover as a man wanted by the Police. The Police and Laurenson fake a shootout with Laurenson escaping into the bush. Of course Thompson and his gang are impressed with this and are soon looking for the man themselves.

To cut to the quick, Laurenson is soon drafted into the gang and helps plan the next bus robbery. The cop gets word to the Police about the plan. When the raid happens, the gang finds a bus full of heavily armed Police. The plan goes sideways and everyone flees with the Police in hot pursuit. The gang is all corralled and hauled off for an extended stay on the State's Dime.
