Plot Summary

It's Thanksgiving and Buffy pushes Giles to host the gang 'as a real American'. Anya finds her lover Xander particularly sexy in his new construction laborer's job, digging a hole during the ceremony for the new Cultural Center at UC Sunnydale, but he falls into an Indian grave inside an old mission, and thus releases the revengeful spirit of the Chumash warrior Hus, who can transform himself into green smoke or various animals. Hus starts his revenge by killing the curator with an 19 century ceremonial Chumash stone knife. The fact that Xander gets the very diseases (sick he seems as erotic to Anya as when sweating bare-chested) the Chumash contracted while virtually enslaved in the Colonial Era. The choice of Hus' victims make Willow, who feels very guilty for the plight of the natives, and Giles, who insists Hus' victims are innocent, realize he must be after historical vengeance. Meanwhile, Riley Finn's military Initiative commando team continues implants rendering vampires unable to bite victims, notably Spike, who is now chased from the Hellmouth by petty Harmony, and seeks refuge at Giles', where he is tied up. Angel is also around again, but insists to Giles and Willow not to tell Buffy. Hus returns to the grave site to awake more Indian spirits, which jointly mount an attack on Giles' home during the dinner, wielding traditional weapons. Written by KGF Vissers

Did You Know?

Edit
Trivia The actual Chumash people was entrenched along the California Central Coast - including around modern Santa Barbara, a probable real-life counterpart to Sunnydale - and numbered as many as 20,000 people before contact with Europeans. The tribe survives today as the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash, which has U.S. recognition as a Native American tribe and controls a reservation and casino in Santa Ynez, California. See more »
Goofs When Willow, Xander, and Anya run into Angel, Anya asks if it is Angel and that it's the first time they met. In fact, Anya had met Angel back in Doppelgangland (1999) at the Bronze even though they had no dialogue between them. See more »

Quotes Buffy Summers: Wil, you know how bad I feel about this. Okay? It's eating me up...
[to Anya]
Buffy Summers: A quarter cup of brandy and let it simmer.
[to Willow]
Buffy Summers: ... but even though it's hard, we have to end this. Yes, he's been wronged, and I personally would be ready to apologize, but I...
Spike: Oh, someone put a stake in me.
Xander Harris: You got a lot of volunteers in *here*.
Spike: I just can't take all this namby-pamby boo-hooing about the bloody Indians.
Willow Rosenberg: Uh, the preferred term is...
Spike: You won. All right? You came in and you killed them, and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did, and he's not goin' around saying, "I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it." The history of the world is not people making friends. You had better weapons, and you massacred them. End of story.
Buffy Summers: Well, I think the Spaniards actually did a lot of...
[to Willow]
Buffy Summers: Not that I don't like Spaniards.
Spike: Listen to you. How you gonna fight anyone with that attitude?
Willow Rosenberg: We don't wanna fight anyone.
Buffy Summers: I just wanna have Thanksgiving.
Spike: [laughs] Yeah... Good luck.
Willow Rosenberg: Well, if we could talk to him...
Spike: You exterminated his race. What could you possibly say that would make him feel better? It's kill or be killed here. Take your bloody pick.
Xander Harris: Maybe it's the syphilis talking, but... some of that made sense.
