Guest star Eddie Albert was a WW II combat veteran. As a naval officer, he piloted landing craft into the beach at Tarawa where he saved the lives of many wounded Marines. For this, he was awarded the Bronze Star with a combat V.
The costume and prop departments did excellent work on Eddie Albert. Not only were his uniform and boots correct for a WW1 "doughboy", but they also gave him the correct rifle and bayonet as well. He is carrying a bolt action 1903 Springfield rifle. There is an extremely long "pig sticker" bayonet attached. Bayonets were shortened after WW1 as the concept of a frontal charge (where a long bayonet might be useful) became suicidal due to the widespread use of machine guns.
