The three Germans in the patrol were running very close together, at most there were 5 feet between the three of them, almost running into each other. If they were really running that fast in the field, they would have been several feet apart.
There were shadows of Sanders in the trench in a direction different from which the moonlight was shining. The shadows from the moonlight could be seen at a different angle.
