The Replacements
claudio_carvalho9 June 2017
When Sgt Saunders finally receives the requested replacements, he is completely disappointed since they are the rookies Pvt. Joe Gainsborough, who was a cook; Pvt. WayneTemple, who was a ballet dancer; and Pvt. Jerome Crown, who was a radio broadcaster in London. Soon Saunders is assigned with Caje, Kirby and the rookies to patrol a small town to check whether there are German troops or not. Saunders divides the group in three pairs to cover the whole town and he stays with the arrogant Crown. Saunders asks him to check one street, but Crown freezes and lies, telling that he checked the area and missing a gun machine nest. Soon his reckless attitude brings consequences to the squad.

Directed by Robert Altman, "Rear Echelon Commandos" shows lessons of war where rookie soldiers must learn how to survive or die, and how dependable their lives are from the correct attitude of his pal. Sunders is a great trainer and he is certainly proud in the end with his new replacements. My vote is eight.

Warning: Spoilers
I've been reacquainting myself with the series, not having watched seriously since its first run when I was 10. Combat has been in my conscious DNA since then and now thanks to YouTube I find myself trying to cram all 150 episodes in but not in any particular order. Rear Echelon Commandos gets off to a slow start but it was only the second episode in the series so I imagine they were still in the early stages of creating one of many different formulaic formats that would become immediately recognizable and predictable but still extremely gripping in later episodes. Formula 1...introduction of the hapless and seemingly cowardice and self absorbed replacements fresh in from the repo depo that eventually go on to do Saunders or Hanly proud regardless if they survive or not. Lets hear it for Bobby Rydel, Tommy Sands and Franki Avalon in later episodes.

Great stuntwork

Warning: Spoilers
Vic is saddled with three green soldiers as replacements, more of a detriment than an asset to the squad. They're sent out on a recon patrol, with newbie John Considine the odd man out -coming from a family of cops but trained as a peaceful ballet dancer.

They check out a seemingly deserted village to report back if there's any signs of Germans still occupying it. Vic is careful but there's no telling how the raw troops will perform. The Germans are dug in waiting, but will the Americans find them?

Vic is saddled with a coward who doesn't search properly, putting them all in jeopardy. Worse yet he lights up a fireplace to cook, alerting the Germans (with a machine gun) to their presence. Exciting stunt work on the rooftops by the dancer saves the day.
