At the start of a new year Eddie gives his father excuses to not go to school anymore. At the school entrance Eddie pauses before running away. At home they're visited by Estelle Sherman (Sally Ann Richards), supervisor of attendance at Eddie's school. Eddie simply just doesn't want to go to school. He reveals to his dad that a bigger kid at school hit him. His father encourages him to try and resolve the issue and if that doesn't work, hit back. Eddie's bully teases him about not having a mother. Eddie hits him and is sent home from school. He now refuses to go to school at all. Tom considers having him homeschooled. After talking to Mrs. Livingston Tom decides he can't protect him in that manner. He tells his son that he will tutor him himself in a plan to make it so hard he will hopefully want to return to school and face his problem.
