One of those episodes, where you feel sorry for Mainwaring.

Pride so often played a big part in the makeup of Captain Mainwaring, so often he was put in the shadows by his Sergeant, and his public school upbringing. In Brains versus Brawn, Mainwaring's pride is pushed to extremes as he is outshone by his Sergeant, his Lance Corporal, and a Private.

Another of those rare episodes, where we see members of the platoon socialising out of hours. You can't help but feel sorry for Mainwaring as his superior Officer chats cordially with the men in the lower ranks, but ignores him.

It's no wonder Mainwaring takes up the challenge laid down, and due to the ingenuity of the team, they succeed. Some of the jokes in the latter part of the episode are a little obvious, and telegraphed, but it is funny, and the delivery is exceptional.

Very good, 8/10.

A curiously unfocused failure

Warning: Spoilers
Brains Versus Brawn is a curiously meandering episode which starts out with a well-worn premise of the platoon trying to prove themselves in an exercise by planting a fake bomb but gets caught up in a lot of quite tedious material in which they disguise themselves as firemen in order to gain access to their target. This sidetracks the episode into some blundering around on a fire engine and attending a real fire, after which a character arrives to deliver a bit of exposition in order to tie off the plot. It's a strange episode that can't seem to keep its eye on the ball, resulting in an all round disappointment.
