At the opening to the Pike residence dinner table, Mrs. Pike admonishes Frank for taking too much of the single pat of butter. She reminds him that it is his week's ration, indicating that the rest of the pat of butter is to be saved. Later on, as Mrs Pike is clearing the table, the need to save the butter is forgotten. She even places the sugar bowl on top of the butter right before she carries the tray of dirty dishes away.
