I have written before about DZ writers wanting to make each show about a different theme. We had a terrorist episode, a virus attack episode, a Columbine episode, a paintings episode, each time forcing an excuse to put Johnny in those environments. The mafia one a few seasons back was a bit stretching it because does this little Maine town have such a big mafioso family so powerful as the one Johnny dealt with? Maybe, maybe not, I was too lazy to research and I wasn't there for that, so even if there is no such community, I tossed the mild question aside and enjoyed what was a great show. But now this show's theme was the illegal Mexican immigrant episode, focusing on the populous group of illegal Mexicans that hang out in a sizable part of the city. Come on, now, Maine is in the northeastern part of the United States. Are you telling me that this is where Mexicans flee to, and where there are "cayotes" and INS agents everything associated with that? Maybe so, but not easy to believe. It reminds me of the Simpsons where there is a little China, little Italy, a Chassidish area and a mafia faction all in this small town of Springfield. Of course, that is part of the joke. If TDZ were to throw a wink my way and say, "Oh, I know her. She lives down there in the Portugese district -wink wink-" Then I'd get over it. But barring that, it turns out to be another episode that makes up another community to fit in with all the other ones already stuffed into Cleaves Mills.
Now that I was able to get that off my chest, this was a pretty well done episode. It introduced us to people we'll never meet again, but teased the fact that we may be seeing one of these characters forever unless Johnny does something to change it. After my merciless ranting about the last episode on the fact that Erica, the lady Sara decided to use as a housekeeper, has vanished into Danaville, and that she's probably hanging out by the train-tracked coal mine that Johnny said his father gave him but then we never got to see from it again, it was nice to see me put my toe in my mouth (not enough for a whole foot) and see Johnny take out the train set his father got him. Of course if Erica really did still exist, we could have had a better babysitter for the newborn.
It was an alright episode to sit through, Bruce got to play a role without having to replace Sara, and the Johnny-Sara tenseness was felt, which I always enjoy.
An interesting to note is that in this episode Johnny looks deep into a newborn baby's future and sees that he's at some sort of award ceremony for the kid when the child is about 15. Well, that's great! That means there's no Armageddon! Johnny has defeated Stillson's plan and the world won't be going under because everyone is sitting there happily! If that's all the case, then this episode really does show us a lot. As it is probably not the case, continuity people!
