In his conversations with Al, Mr. Wu frequently refers to white men with the Cantonese term "gwai lo." Literally translated it means "ghost man," a derogatory reference to white men's pale skin. The term remains in common usage today, but is no longer considered impolite.
First appearance in the series by Richard Gant, playing Hostetler, the first black character of note in the series.
Titus Welliver (Silas Adams) first appearance in the series. He and several other actors from this episode also worked on Sons of Anarchy. The other actors are: Keone Young (Mr. Wu), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane), Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter), Ray McKinnon (Reverend H.W. Smith), and Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs).
At timestamp 25:10, Hostetler enters star & Bullock hardware, pestering bullock about buying his stable, which doesn't go well with bullock, who tells him "you dont wanna rush me"... Hostetler realised the futility in his efforts and says to Sol, "I'll be havin' a pickaxe" to which sol replied, "a bargain at seven dollars!". Taking into account this script aired in 2004, and the episode being set near 1877, that would make the "bargain" price equivalent to around $125 in 2004 money. Not exactly a bargain, considering a pickaxe costs an average $30. The more accurate line for Sol would have been, "A bargain at one dollar!", which equates to about $25 in today's money.
