Sequoyah (c.1770-1843) started working on his Cherokee alphabet in 1809, and completed it in 1821; it was officially adopted by the Cherokee Nation in 1825. His name is believed to come from the Cherokee word "siqua" or "sikwa," meaning "hog," which references a childhood deformity or later injury that left him disabled.
