THE DEPUTY – "The Return of Widow Brown' – 1961 This Western series starred Henry Fonda and Alan Case as the Marshal and Deputy of Silver City. The series ran for 76 episodes between 1959 and 1961.
In this episode, Norma Crane has returned to Silver City after an absence of eight years. She intends to fix up the family farm and raise her son. Crane is not all that welcome in the town. It seems that her outlaw husband had held up the local bank and made off with all the cash. A group of masked men had raided the farm the next day and lynched the man. But they never recovered the cash. The pregnant Crane had left town right after.
Deputy Case pays a visit to the farm to check up on Crane. Does she know what happened to the cash? Crane answers that her husband never told her where he and his gang hid the cash.
Deputy Case checks around and finds that the only man of the gang still alive is doing time in prison. He pays a visit to the man, Richard Shannon, for a chat. Shannon tells Case that the gang never got a cent of the cash. Crane's husband had hidden it somewhere. And of course after the lynching, the dead man was not doing much talking.
Case arranges with the prison warden for Shannon to escape. Case and his man, Read Morgan will then follow Shannon. He hopes to the hidden cash.
Shannon takes the bait and grabs a horse and gun. Straight to the woman Crane's ranch he rides. Shannon sticks a pistol in Crane's face and demands she reveal the hiding place. When he realizes that Crane has no idea about the cash. Shannon starts tearing the place apart. He also admits it was not the townsfolk who lynched her husband. It was Shannon and the rest of the gang. They wanted their cut right away.
Case and Morgan now show and get the drop on Shannon. It is back to the prison for him with the added murder charge.
OK episode which features brief walk-ons at the start and finish by first billed Fonda.
