My Favorite Season 1 Episode

A definite early-series classic with a script that boasts great pacing, hilarious dialog and a premise ripe for both jokes and character.

It's fun how Suzanne calls Julia and Mary-Jo out on the double standard of liberated females (they don't want them around their OWN sons). Julia's coldness towards Primmy seems a little harsh throughout most of the episode, but comes off as justified by the time it's over.

Payne's girlfriend really is a pain.

Warning: Spoilers
George Newbern makes the first of a handful of appearances as Julia's son Payne, visiting with his much older girlfriend, a domineering college professor who threatens Julia with taking her son away from her. It's a funny situation but uncomfortable to watch because of the hypocrisy of the feminist viewpoints contradicting each other. Natalija Nogulich reminds me of Bebe Neuwirth as "Primirose Horton" (whom they purposely call Prissy) but she is directed to consistently have her nose so far up in the air that she can smell the ozone layer disappearing. For viewers of the show who dislike Julia, this is an example of her at her most repulsive even though through a mother's concern for her son's future, she does seem justified. The early episodes were indeed hit and miss, and with the girls discussing feminist causes, they sometimes come off as rather judgmental towards their own gender in ways that don't often seem fair.
