The Eastern European country in this story is most probably Hungary, as the characters' names are obviously intended to sound Hungarian (although most of them are spelled incorrectly). Hungary was indeed a communist country at the time, and the birthplace of both Charles Korvin and Oscar Beregi Jr.. Some of the names might be inspired by known Hungarian figures. "Karoli" (correctly spelled "Károlyi") was the name of a noble family in Hungary, which included former prime minister Mihály Károlyi. "Tokoli" (correctly spelled "Thököly") might refer to Count Imre Thököly, a 17th century Transylvanian prince. "Pazmany" is the name of Péter Pázmány, a famous theologian and leading Jesuit cardinal in 17th century Hungary.
