- Hydrophobic Urkel has two choices: Pass a required swimming test in gym class, or fail and not graduate from high school. Urkel decides to enlist (who else) Carl to help him learn to swim, to predictable results.
- Urkel has a nearly spotless academic record. Why? He hasn't passed physical education, where as part of the class' requisite, he must pass a simple swimming test. The problem is that he suffers from an acute case of hydrophobia, hence his currently incomplete grade in the course. Now, having run out of excuses and time, Steve asks a reluctant Carl for some help learning to swim.
Meanwhile, while playing hockey in the living room, an exicted Richie who made the the street hockey team, accidentally tears Rachel's new dress. When she goes to take it back,(because Richie needs new hockey equiptment) Harriette, who works at the department store Rachel brought it from, sees the tear and accuses her of tearing the dress causing friction between them at home.
Carl tries his best to teach the scaredy cat Urkel (who gets into the pool but nearly drowns himself and Carl). Of course, the swimming lessons prove to be little more than a lesson in frustration and he wants to give up right away. However, Laura comes up with an idea to get Steve to overcome his hydrophoba, she'll have to get into the pool and pretend to be the drowning victim.
In the Kitchen, Rachel and Harriette's fight takes another twisted turn during lunch. That is until, Richie finally had enough and confesses that he ruined the dress by putting a hole on it with his hockey stick because he was playing hockey in the living room with Eddie. Rachel asks him why he didn't come to her about it sooner. Richie revealed he wanted to wait until he graduated high school to tell her the truth and apologizes. However, Estelle reminds Harriette that she owes Rachel an apology for accusing her of ruining the dress after his confession. Harriette apologizes for falsely accusing her for ruining the dress. Rachel apologizes for burying her favorite purse, which infuriates her. She draws Harriette a map where she could find it.
Urkel seems resigned to never graduating from high school ... until he sees Laura nearly drowning in the swimming pool. Without a moment's thought, Steve dives into the pool and "saves" the life of the object of his affection. Why is "saves" in quotes? Because Laura was pretending to be in danger, to encourage her friend. Of course, all's well that ends well. The episode even ends with Urkel and Carl swimming synchronized.
