Son (#2.15)

Just another episode on Eddie and Carl's father-son relationship. Eddie loses Carl's screwdriver and also disobeys him when getting grounded. So he ends up almost moving out.

In order for him not to move out what they do is to remember how he was born. Just another cliché of the panicking father (while the mother is all calm and ready). And at the end he is all proud of delivering the kid by himself.

While the story is boring and I hate the panicking father/calm mother cliché at birth, I did still find Reginald VelJohnson's performance during that scene absolutely hilarious and brilliant. He alone is what keeps it above the average.

So let me get this straight, in the previous episode Carl wants to spend time with Eddie, but Eddie makes him feel to old, and they end up going on a trip fishing only for Carl to nearly drown and Eddie realizing what he has, and he can appreciate a lot more his dad now. So what is this episode about? Eddie losing a screw driver and being grounded for mouthing off to Carl, only to threaten to leave and in the end because he learns Carl gave him some kind words when he was born , he now appreciates Carl much more. Please, this is one lousy episode with a tired plotline, only 1 season a half in and they already have run out of ideas. It doesn't make any sense to have Eddie just in the end of last episode give value to Carl only to disrespect him in this one (Carl should't even had to apologize to Eddie, he was just a rude brat boy, they didn't even make a good job for us to understand both sides). Why do I give it a 4 and not a 2 or a 1 if I detest it so? For two reasons: First, this is the one time since the "Urkel" phase, where they actually tried to have a story concentrating on the familly, respecting the origins of the show, Urkel is a part of the episode, but a very minor one, and honestly if he had't shown up in this episode wouldn't make a difference (even though the only remotly funny scenes were with him) . And second the flashback scene is a very good and tender one, you actually have the funny side of the ridiculous hair dues and Carl's clumsiness and also the very tender side when he is holding his son, Reginald proves why he's probably the ONLY good actor in this show (apart from Jaleel). Also where was Judy and Estelle? Yes I know they are minor characters and Judy doesn't have any lines anyhow, but i believe they are supposed to live in that house, so it doesn't make much sense. I end with a positive note, Carl's line "I've never been a father, I guess you've never been a son too, we'll learn together" that was the highlight of the episode. Still, a disappointing one. 4/10 **** Peter Shelby

Very touching moment between Carl and Eddie in the end. As someone who's had my fair share of arguments with my own father, I can really relate to this episode. Glad they patched things up in the end, instead of wasting a whole lot of time apart.
