Extremely tense and disturbing episode

All the stories in this series are well written and tight, but at this point the composer Edwin Astley has begun to hit his stride and you will hear familiar themes from "Secret Agent" and "The Saint" included. In this episode the lovely Ann Bell portrays a witness to a baby-snatching. It seems the woman parked her baby buggy outside the store, leaving the baby on board(!) while she goes into the store. This is only a prelude to the real story in which involves the disappearance of her husband, along with his clothes and suitcase. The police react pretty much like they'd react today, which is to say not much. The whole episode is exceptionally tense, perhaps more so because Ann's character and her husband are so typically normal, not gangsters or cops, just people like you and me. You'll be on the edge of your seat until the closing seconds. This episode really stuck with me.

A great episode.

Netta and Michael Penn are desperate to escape the boarding house in which they live, and eventful day sees Netta witness a kidnap, and Michael attacked by his landlord for his bit of luck on the horses.

I am thoroughly enjoying this series, and this rates as one of the top three episodes, this one has it all, intrigue and suspense, tension galore, and there are some genuinely unsettling moments here, don't expect any lighter touches, there aren't any, it really is full of malice.

It's excellent from start to finish, but that ending is edge of the seat viewing, one thing they really built on, the worst emotion of all, greed.

Very well produced as you'd expect, well paced, cracking visuals.

Some genuinely brilliant acting, what a cast list here, Ann Bell and Megs Jenkins are both excellent, the standout for me here though was John Barrie, he'd have been best known at the time as Sergeant Cork, and if you've not seen it, I'd really recommend it.

9/10.

Warning: Spoilers
The moral of this story is that if you win the pools, keep quiet about it.

Michael Penn (Richard Carpenter) wins over £700, tells his work colleague and buys a fancy coat for his wife.

However trouble emerges when Michael tells his greedy landlord Will Riker about it. They get into an altercation and Michael dies.

Riker covers up the death by telling Michael's wife Netta that her husband has disappeared. Netta already had a stressful day at work where a baby was snatched outside the shop she works in.

As Netta has been cooperating with the police already over the baby being snatched, she comes to the attention of the Gideon.

I did think the investigation was a bit lax. Michael suddenly disappeared and left his job does seem odd. Gideon should had smelled a rat once the work colleague mentioned the pools win. Also when the landlord suddenly turfed Netta out.

Oh well at least Michael had a loyal dog who sniffed out the truth.

Richard Carpenter who plays Michael was better knows as a writer of Catweazle and Robin of Sherwood.
