Big Daddy (#1.24)
ComedyFan201012 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Blanche is waiting for her "Big Daddy" to come over. When he does he shocks her because he sold his estate to become a country singer even though he is horrible at it. The neighbor's tree falls on their property and he refuses to deal with it, so Sophia "curses" him and he has all the bad things happen to him which apparently were made by his wife to make him behave better.

Both stories had their funny moments. The whole "big daddy" thing including the dress Blanche wore made me laugh. A very standard story though.

And the whole curse storyline was the funniest, I like how they made the ending.

The little twig from the storyline tree is the branch that creates a mightier oak than the actual trunk of this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
"Back home we just say how do" says Murray Hamilton as he makes his entrance as Dorothy opens the door in fury, believing it to be neighbor Gordon Jump who refuses to take even partial responsibility for the tree that has fallen into Blanche's back yard after a storm. She's willing to swing half of the cost to have it removed, but Jump claims the tree is not on his property so he is not responsible. This leads to Sophia putting a curse on Jump much to his shock (as well as his wife Peggy Pope's), and much to everybody's surprise, the curse seems to come true.

Meanwhile, Hamilton (playing Blanche's father, Big Daddy Hollingsworth), has been living out his widowed years trying to get together a singing act, and announces that he has sold Hollingsworth manner. (This detail is changed in later years after Big Daddy's death.) Blanche is horrified by her father making a fool out of himself, and indeed, Big Daddy can't sing worth a plug nickle. "I never should have tried that Beatle's medley", he says in disappointment, and Blanche comes to the realization that it is his life to mess up as he pleases so some sort of agreement between the two must be made.

The affection between Blanche and her father is inconsistent with details previously mentioned (and later brought up in stories that Blanche told), so the writing is rather weak for that story. The saga of the tree, however, is a different story, with Gordon Jump appropriately obnoxious and some delicious revelations concerning Peggy Pope as Jump's wife. That's the better part of this episode which moved my rating up from a 4 to a 6. Sophia gets the best moments in that story, and the situations that occur thanks to her curse are downright hysterical. Ms. Pope becomes the girl's new heroine with her confession, ultimately winning plaudits for stealing the episode.

'I wanna see the witch.'

Blanche is super excited when her father, Big Daddy arrives for a visit, with some big news, meanwhile a dispute with a neighbour prompts Sophia into some Sicilian action.

I really did enjoy this episode, it may not be the funniest of all, but it has several sweet moments, and it's not totally without laughs, Sophia steals several of the scenes with some wonderful one liners.

The look on the faces of Dorothy and Blanche when poor Rose is explaining the tuna story, just wonderful, if looks could kill.

I'm a big fan of Murray Hamilton, and he was cracking here as Big Daddy I thought, his second to last acting role, loaded with charisma.

Mess with the girls at your peril.

8/10.

A sentimental favorite
CubsandCulture6 June 2022
Blanche focused episodes are usually my favorite ones in any given year. This is one I think is quite charming despite Big Daddy not being old enough to be Blanche's father. In a lot of ways this show about second life once you reach the golden years and there is just something very touching of an old guy chasing rainbows with such earnestness. And the thick Gone with the Wind atmosphere adds up to a lot of laughs.

Very weak episode
simon_welch222 December 2010
This is a weak episode of Series 1, not helped by incredibly poor casting of Blanche's father; to me, he looked more suited to be latest suitor than her much lauded father. For me, I simply could not believe in the character or the relationship between the two actors.

The plot itself is weak and concerns Blanche's father's decision to sell the family home and take up[ a career as a country and western singer, despite having no talent whatsoever.

There are the usual scattering of sassy one liners, as usual Bea Arthur taking the lion's share of these, but overall this episode left me disappointed.

Murray Hamilton's next to last role
Chase_Witherspoon19 June 2011
Just watched this episode and while I'm not a GG devotee, I was drawn to remain in front of the box during this episode by the appearance of Murray Hamilton. More specifically, I was quite shocked at his appearance - that of a gaunt, emaciated-looking and frail old man. I was aware that he died in the mid eighties of cancer, and his condition looks apparent in this episode.

He plays Blanche's father with accentuated southern country tone and garb, even though he's only a dozen years older than was Rue McClanahan in real life. Consequently it was difficult to believe his character was her father. Much is made by Dorothy of the Southern colloquialisms used by Blanche and her father, though they weren't especially funny in the first instance. A couple of mild chuckles typically emanate from Sofia attempting to intimidate a neighbour with whom the GGs are in dispute over a tree.

Formula comedy, but notable as Murray Hamilton's next to last role before his untimely passing.
