Old but gold

Warning: Spoilers
I loved this episode!, it was perfect the whole way through. It's about a teenager Carly Beth who gets scared way to easily. She also gets terrified buy her own friend, well best friend. I've seen this episode multiple times on Netflix because its just epic. I think this part is a little stronger than the other part. Now this has great music, cast were good the whole way through, and creeps you out. Now its ashame that Netflix took down Season 2. I have seasons 3 and 4 and number 1 is on Netflix. Now the mask design's for its day in age still are well made and produced. The greatness of this episode is just down to it's perfect ideas and story telling.

You should definitely give this a try on Netflix thanks for reading this and take notes if you want and stay safe from Covid 19 That's me signing out Goodbye until the next time

It feels like you're watching a different show entirely
david_hokey_1615 March 2016
So, I've seen this episode - as well as many of the Goosebumps episodes - many, many times. SO why am I just now reviewing this one? Well, I was putting together a list of the best episodes of the series and when I started with this one I just couldn't find enough space in my blurb to say why it is the best episode of the entire show. To begin with, this was the first episode I saw though I barely remember my first viewing because I was only 5 staying up late one night to catch the premiere. But, when you watch this episode and then begin watching the following episodes you feel as if you've just started watching a completely different show. Why? Because this episode itself is so magical, so well-acted, so well-written, so atmospheric that later episodes - which while many were good still could come off as corny - just couldn't compare. As children, we remember just about every episode to be creepy and fun. But as an adult when you go back and re-watch the most you feel is a tinge of nostalgia as you wince at just how bad some of the child actors were, how bad some of the lines were, and how cheesy some of the villains or stories were altogether. But not the Haunted Mask. It is as effective as ever. Kathryn's performance as timid Carly-Beth still manages to hold up. From her stuttering explanations at how she hates being scared, her revulsion at learning she was tricked into eating a worm and fleeing her laughing schoolmates, to her sinister behavior as the mask's influence begins to take hold. Throw in the scene when she realizes she can't take it off and her ultimate despair when the shopkeeper tells her that this is her new face and you'd think this young girl was gonna go places in the ways of acting. But it isn't just her performance, albeit amazing, that makes this episode so grand. The atmosphere is truly haunting. You actually begin to feel a sense of danger as the mask takes hold of Carly-Beth. The writing and directing are so well-done that you can easily empathize with her rather than write her off as a clichéd TV character, and that makes her descent into madness all the more haunting. It presents a story worth watching: one of a girl who grew to hate herself and wanted to be someone else only to realize that who she was before was the one that was truly loved and only that love can save her in the end. It was pretty heavy for a show aimed at children even within a horror setting. You'll also get in a few laughs as Carly-Beth's erratic behavior starts to border on sociopathic such as when she scares a group of trick-or-treaters and then begins to snicker in a way that is both eerie and somehow funny. My point is this: this was the first episode of the series and the first many people were introduced to and probably the most memorable, but that isn't why it is the best. There were many other great episodes that followed but they were great by Goosebumps standards. This episode is great by its own - not just as a Goosebumps episode but as a standalone television special. It doesn't fit in with the other episodes because they were so plainly obvious that they were low-budget made-for-children TV. The Haunted Mask feels like something else entirely and that makes it special.

Very well done

This is how they should've adapted the rest of the books. With a bigger budget, longer run time, better actors and better written.

Another Childhood Favorite!!!
Pumpkin_Man16 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
As a child, I loved this episode! I still consider it my favorite Goosebumps movie! Carly Beth is sick and tired of being scared all the time by Chuck and Steve, so she decides to get even. She goes to a Novelty Shop and finds the scariest mask she's ever seen. On HALLOWEEN night, Carly and her friend, Sabrina go trick-or-treating and Sabrina notices that Carly has changed ever since she put the mask on. Later, after she gets her revenge and scares Chuck and Steve, she tries to take the mask off, but it has become her new face. Carly goes back to the store and asks the manager for help. He tells her that only the symbol of love can help take the mask off. The other masks like Carly's start to come alive and try to get Carly Beth to join them. Can Carly Betn find the symbol of love in time? If you love Goosebumps, HALLOWEEN, and masks, you'll love THE HAUNTED MASK!!!

Magnus Opus of Goosebumps
rohanumpleby-340573 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A really well crafted episode. Carly Beth plays this typical girl who is scared of everything. So Chuck and Steve play there daft silly schemes on her, just to scare her. So for Halloween she wants something really scary, she wants a costume that can make Chuck and Steve pay for what they've done. So she goes to the new antique store to buy one. She then becomes a completely different character and has a completely different personer. The mask starts to make her do weird things, and she scares a poor little girl. She has a weird voice on her with the Mask and everything. And goes to scare Chuck and Steve successfully works. The music is amazing for it's time. The characters are well developed and interesting. The story is well paced and never gets boring. It's an engaging. The fact the Mask doesn't come of is creepy and scary at the same time. The episode has a bunch of scares and surprises!, Very good, Magnus Opus of Goosebumps indeed!

10/10 Freakin MASTERPIECE.

Scared the living daylights out of me as a kid and still does
lisafordeay6 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Haunted Mask is a two part episode from the Goosebumps series and was the first episode from the show. The episode tells the tale of a young girl named Carly Beth who is a shy timid girl who gets bullied in school over her costume for Halloween. Desperate to find something more scarier, she stumbles across a mysterious novelty shop where Carly finds a ton of masks. The owner of the shop freaks out and she grabs a mask from the stand and runs off.

So when Carly gets home she says i'll show them and decides to put it on. When she does put it on her best friend Sabrina finds that there is something wrong with Carly as her voice changes when she has the mask on. She later takes off the mask and decides to put it on again. But later on in the show she tries to take it off but of course she can't seem to find the part where she can take it off as it is now stuck on her face and she cannot remove it. Scared she goes back to the shop and the owner of the shop says that the only way to remove the mask is if she can love herself more and when she does the mask is removed and she is back to herself again.

Will the mask come back again to find another host.

Overall this episode creeps me out ever since I was a kid. The actress as Carly Beth was very good and the moral of the film is all about accepting your own skin and to love yourself more. It actually reminds me of the 1994 film The Mask where Stanley puts on a mask and actually alters his personality. So I know I am off track here but Carly Beth reminds me of Stanley Ipkiss where she was trying to be something she wasn't.

If you want something to scare the crap out of you. Watch this for Halloween. Enjoy.

Halloween Fun
jfgibson7330 October 2021
It was a fun episode. Silly and dated with over the top performances, and not really a well written story, but just good enough to be something worth watching at Halloween time.
