- While Sarah feels undermined by Marcus's cocky attitude, she is aware that he is the Grand's best hope for survival as he is an idea man. He sells off some slum dwellings he owns but his proposal that the resident staff be made to live outside of the hotel in order to facilitate more guest rooms is vehemently opposed, with the staff threatening strike action, and ultimately the idea is rejected. Instead, the hotel's laundry will do the washing for other hotels and institutions in the city. Janet Brady, an unmarried, pregnant ex-employee of the Grand, indirectly made homeless by Marcus's sale, comes to the hotel for work and when Sarah can only offer to recommend her to a hostel, Janet spits in her face.—don @ minifie-1
- With Marcus Bannerman now on board as a full partner, the hotel's future seems secure. Marcus quickly demonstrates that he will be a very active partner however and on his first day suggests that the staff quarters in the hotel be converted to guest rooms forcing the staff to find their own accommodation. He also challenges many long-existing practices and is determined to maximize his £40,000 investment, some of which he had to borrow. For maid Kate Morris, life becomes complicated when former employee Janet Brady asks for assistance. Janet is several months pregnant and has been evicted from her lodgings. She asks for Kate's help in staying in a vacant room. When Janet is found out, she is forcibly evicted from the premises but Sarah Bannerman is upset to learn that she was indirectly responsible for Janet losing her lodgings in the first place.—garykmcd
