- The only man who didn't treat Beulah like dirt is marrying another woman, but her brother doesn't want him in the family. When the groom is shot leaving the church, everyone suspects the new brother-in-law.
- The romance between Beulah and Nat Cypress is cut short by Nat's engagement to Polly Troyman, the daughter of a displaced plantation owner. Polly's brother swears revenge for what he believes is Nat's wandering eye. Nat and Polly marry anyway, with unexpected results.
Beulah goes to the saloon to see Nat, who is buying rounds for the patrons. Beulah shyly adores Nat, who buys her a bottle of wine. Upon learning Nat is engaged to be married in two days, Beulah is noticeably stunned and distraught and leaves the saloon. The following morning, Nat meets Beulah at her home. Unseen by them is Henry, Polly's brother, watching from the brush. Later, when Nat saunters into the saloon for a last round before the wedding, Henry walks in and confronts Nat. He believes the marriage is disreputable and Nat has a wandering eye. Angry, he warns Nat if the marriage happens, there would be consequences. Nat shrugs off the warning, and the following day he and Polly are married. While leaving the church, Nat is shot and wounded. It's up to Marshal Dillon and Chester Goode to figure out who is the shooter.
