Have rope will travel

This episode works well and is well written creating a good jeopardy situation and has some things you won't see coming.

It does however sort of muff the ending, well almost the ending.

I won't give it away but there is a bit of a rushed climax which fades out quickly avoiding a scene that probably wouldn't have been convincing. Or it ran long or something.

Then it has a well done wrap up scene that could have been perfunctory but makes the story.

Directed without much style by TV vet Lamont Johnson.

A Neat Twist
dougdoepke17 January 2012
A lynch mob is forming, led by Widow Briggs (Gregg) whose womanizing son has been killed by slow-witted Andy (Russell). The sheriff (Swenson) needs help so Paladin's on his way.

If any woman could lead a lynch mob convincingly, it's Gregg, who specialized in just such willful types. Her forceful talents made her a favorite of early series TV. The episode shaped up like a routine one until the neat twist that I didn't see coming. Note how the sense of justice is surprisingly modern. Also, note presence of Bing Russell, Kurt Russell's dad, along with Astaire dance partner Barrie Chase as the sheriff's comely daughter. Except for the twist, however, it's an unexceptional episode.
