A television station is running a competition for young film makers, the top prize being £5,000. As Doughnut has been given a new movie camera for his birthday, the other Double Deckers decide to enter.
Scooper sits in the director's chair, much to the annoyance of Doughnut, who had wanted to direct. Instead he gets to play the romantic lead in the Western adventure: "Good Day At Yellow Rock'.
There's one problem - they need a stuntman to replace him, so they ask Albert despite him being noticeably thinner and older.
An accident in the editing room causes the film's mistakes to be left in, hence when it is premiered on national television the Double Deckers are made to look incredibly stupid...
Melvyn Hayes co-wrote this, which means he gets a bigger role than in the two proceeding instalments. All sorts of awful things happen to him, of which being hit by custard pies is the least worst.
The finished film put me in mind of 'Ericson The Viking' from the classic 'Hancock's Half-Hour' series, with continuity errors in abundance.
The B.B.C. children's series 'Screen Test' ( hosted by Michael Rodd ) used to run a 'Young Filmmakers Of The Year' contest; some of the entries were quite disturbing, particularly one in which a young boy drowned. The Double Deckers effort is nothing like that thankfully.
The T.V. compere is played by the late Norman Vaughan, a forgotten figure now, but back in the 1960's a highly popular comedian/presenter with 'Sunday Night At The London Palladium' to his name. Later he replaced Bob Monkhouse as host of 'The Golden Shot', and co-created 'Bullseye' for Jim Bowen.
Funniest moment - the film itself, an absolute disaster, though I have seen some Westerns it leaves standing in the credibility stakes!
