Ted takes up the challenge from their sergeant that the Yellowcoats are as fit as his boys and a running race is organized. The camp's staff win by cheating as two of the Yellowcoat lads are twins and one takes the other's place near the winning post. - During the morning announcement, Gladys mentions that there will be a visit from the Royal Marines gymnastics team to give a gymnastic display on the sports field. The male Yellowcoats aren't impressed, as the women only have eyes for the Marines and not them, although Clive thinks there may be a way out of his relationship with Gladys in this. Meanwhile, Uncle Sammy is struggling to make the first move with one of the servers in the Happy Halibut Fish Bar, and Julian saves Yvonne from a perilous spider in her chalet but it's not quite the direct route to her heart he had hoped.
That afternoon, the Royal Marines are setting up their equipment and campers are arriving to watch, with the Yellowcoats handing out deckchairs. A teenage boy, Trevor, is playing the organ but Ted manages to put a stop to his tinkering. Ted's bookmaker has arrived to watch the display, being a former Royal Marine. The display is about to start, but Ramona, the camp organist, is nowhere to be found, so Peggy is deputed to take her place. However, Peggy is clearly less able than Ramona and can only play songs in certain keys - the resulting display leaves the Royal Marines a laughing stock. The sergeant-major turns his ire on Ted for mocking them, having already given him a dressing down for his lack of fitness. The argument comes to a head when Ted claims the Yellowcoat men could beat the Royal Marines over their assault course - and Ted's bookmaker offers him impressive odds which seals the deal. In the next staff meeting, Ted refuses to back down, and the Yellowcoat men assert they can at least take them on.
A few days later, Fred is cleaning a saddle in his chalet when Uncle Sammy arrives - in a smart new suit, with his hair trimmed and dyed, and his nails manicured. He's already made a hit with the object of his affections in the Happy Halibut Fish Bar. Meanwhile, the entertainments staff are in the Laughing Cow Milk Bar and Ted reveals his plans for beating the Royal Marines - by having the twins masquerade as one individual. However, his plans are scuppered when Gary reveals he won't be taking part due to a private medical appointment. Ted sets out his precise plans for stalling the Royal Marines to allow the Yellowcoats to switch Stanley for Bruce. The Yellowcoat men are reluctant to take part, but Ted convinces them that Trevor is really a genius pianist and is all set to study in Moscow if he can raise the money for his fare - hence the bet. They eventually agree, with Peggy agreeing to substitute for Gary.
On the day of the race, everyone is enthusiastic except for Clive, who has a hangover. The Royal Marines have sent over fatigues and boots for the competitors. Ted has organised two coaches to bring campers to the assault course to cheer the Yellowcoats on. At the course, Ted makes sure Bruce is hiding in the right place, but then has to make sure that Stanley is wearing the same race number as his brother. The Royal Marines bring equipment packs for the visitors to wear - Peggy falls down under the weight, so the sergeant-major concedes that the packs can go, and gives the visitors a two-minute head start.
Cheered on by the female Yellowcoats and a crowd of campers, the male Yellowcoats start in a burst of enthusiasm but soon Peggy is struggling to keep up and Clive's hangover isn't helping him. They get through by helping each other along, but then the Royal Marines start the course - at a far faster pace than the Yellowcoats can manage. By the time they reach the tarpaulin crawl, the Yellowcoats are struggling and the Royal Marines aren't far behind. Peggy just manages to create her distraction in time. Next comes the rope swing over the stream - where the Royal Marines overtake the Yellowcoats.
Ted dashes to the front of the drainpipes and gets Bruce to start his part of the race. A short time later the Royal Marines come through the drainpipes. He manages to sprint to the finish line ahead of the Royal Marines, followed a few minutes later by the rest of the Yellowcoat men - exhausted, but proud of their achievement. Ted tries to keep Stanley hidden while the Royal Marines are put on a charge by their sergeant-major.
That night, everyone is dancing in the Hawaiian Ballroom. Clive isn't happy that his hangover never went away and he hasn't had his share of the betting winnings. During a parade of the winning Yellowcoat men, Gladys announces she has a cheque for £250 - Ted's winnings - but that Ted's not going to keep the money for himself, which is news to Ted. She invites Peggy and Trevor onstage, and introduces the audience to Trevor and his musical genius. Trevor's parents, sitting at a table, are convinced it's one of Maplin's practical jokes. Trevor is invited to give a demonstration of his talents, which underwhelms everyone. Peggy isn't disheartened - she gives the cheque to Trevor's parents, suggesting he'll be studying in Moscow for "a long time".
