- Groundskeeper God: Sometimes when you're lost, it's an opportunity to cultivate a new place for yourself.
- Joan Girardi: And this is supposed to inspire me? The Charlie Brown Christmas tree of metaphors?
- [he just stares]
- Joan Girardi: You want me to take care of this?
- [no response]
- Joan Girardi: Remember when you used to tell me to go try out for the cheerleaders? What happened to that?
- Groundskeeper God: If it's an assignment you want, you better get to Physics. You're late.
- Joan Girardi: Whose fault is that?
- Joan Girardi: Sorry I'm late. I had a... a thing.
- Ms. Lischak: And I, in turn, was marking a late "thing" in my book. Coincidence? Or one event determined by separate indeterminate actions? Hmm.
- Joan Girardi: Am I supposed to know what she said?
- Adam Rove: Oh, I wasn't listening. Um, I was looking at you.
- Friedman: Hey. Where's my Judith?
- Joan Girardi: Friedman, the kiss meant nothing. She was drunk.
- Friedman: You sweet, naïve child.
- Joan Girardi: Did you really skip the whole day?
- Judith Montgomery: Oh, Danny got his parents' convertible. We went for a drive.
- Adam Rove: Well, Danny's been in the tenth grade for three years.
- Judith Montgomery: He was kind of a moron.
- Joan Girardi: You think you'll survive out here all alone? You're pathetic. You're me.
- Loner Loser Kid God: It needs water. And you should turn the soil.
- Joan Girardi: Why don't you, if you're so concerned, foghead?
- Loner Loser Kid God: It's your assignment, Joan. You asked for it.
- Joan Girardi: [realizing who it is] This is a new look for you.
- Loner Loser Kid God: Yeah. I mean, the jeans are really comfy.
- Adam Rove: Hey.
- Joan Girardi: [surprised] Oh! I'd... I'd stay away. I'm kind of caked with fertilizer, and we all know what that's made of.
- Will Girardi: Ease up, man. Our medical plan doesn't cover stomach stapling.
- Det. Carlisle: I'm peckish. Happens whenever a grieving family member accuses me of murder.
- Will Girardi: The shooters we caught last week...
- Undersheriff Roy Roebuck: The ones that hit the eight year old kid?
- Det. Carlisle: Yeah. The only witness against them dies in a fire. Convenient.
- Undersheriff Roy Roebuck: They're drug dealers. Their friends wanted to send a message. Roasting some woman isn't exactly a moral quandry for them.
- Will Girardi: [handing him a folder] Which is why you should see this. For Mary Wallace's house. Arson says the fire started in the basement. Probably a box close to the heater. Now, you came from the arson squad. You buy it?
- Undersheriff Roy Roebuck: Well, there seems to be a lot of accelerant here. Runs from the back window.
- Det. Carlisle: Meaning?
- Undersheriff Roy Roebuck: A pro. Gangbanger's not gonna waste time hiding his tracks like this.
- Will Girardi: The two shooters told us to look to our own. We got the same song at the funeral.
- Undersheriff Roy Roebuck: Oh, yeah? And I thought we finally cleaned this place up.
- Will Girardi: Funny, Roy. Isn't this where we met? Outside looking in.
- Judith Montgomery: Want a cigarette?
- Adam Rove: No, thanks. Big fan of the lungs.
- Judith Montgomery: Okay. You know, I'm usually the only one around here this early, so I won't have to endure the breakfast inquisition with the shrinks. You?
- Adam Rove: Uh, I just wanted to see Joan's garden.
- Judith Montgomery: You could see it later with her.
- Adam Rove: Be weird if she were here. You know, we always work on these kind of projects together. This is the first time that we're not.
- Judith Montgomery: Is it because of me?
- Adam Rove: Uh, no. It's, uh... yeah. Sorry.
- Judith Montgomery: I used to plant stuff with my dad. Then he got busy, got a gardener, and we stopped doing that kind of thing. Guess that's why I freaked when Joan said she wanted to do the garden, huh?
- Luke Girardi: I've thought about it, and I do wanna work within your terms.
- Grace Polk: Well, you shouldn't. It's totally unfair.
- Luke Girardi: See, that's the thing. I-I don't think they are. I mean, basically, I've been asking for a total regime change in your public and personal life. But you know what? I looked up every major political revolution in the last hundred years, a-and not even the most violent ones were sudden. You know, they-they built up over years of dissatisfaction and unrest.
- Grace Polk: Did you make a special effort not to use a science metaphor?
- Luke Girardi: I'm trying to expand my range.
- Grace Polk: So, basically, you're saying what?
- Luke Girardi: I'm willing to wait. Hoping that the, uh, revolution will gain some small foothold in the outer regions, such as, uh, maybe an occasional exchange of words in public.
- Loner Loser Kid God: It was a cool garden, Joan. And I loved the fire spear.
- Joan Girardi: [meaning Judith] Is she gonna be okay?
- Loner Loser Kid God: She was planting crocuses and tulips. It doesn't matter if the ground gets bulldozed, 'cause they'll still come up in the spring. She knew that.
- Joan Girardi: So what I was growing...
- Loner Loser Kid God: Grew.
- Joan Girardi: Hey.
- Adam Rove: Hi. I uh... I made you a tree for the garden.
- Joan Girardi: Are those cigarette butts?
- Adam Rove: Yeah. I-I dipped them in leftover Slushies. The sugar makes killer glue.
- Joan Girardi: What are the yellow thingies?
- Grace Polk: They're mums. They bloom in the fall, attract the bees, the bees polinate the non-flowering shrubs, which keep the aphids from eating other plants.
- [seeing her expression]
- Grace Polk: What?
- Joan Girardi: You researched all that?
- Grace Polk: One episode of one show on the Home and Garden Channel. Don't make me regret this.
- Grace Polk: What's this?
- Luke Girardi: Well, even warring tribes have been known to make peace offerings in, uh, you know, recognition of their commonalities.
- Grace Polk: Did you just make that up?
- Luke Girardi: Yes. It's a... it's a seedling for a sunflower. It's hard to believe it can grow over eight feet tall. I stole it from Joan.
- Grace Polk: I can't believe she's still at it.
- Luke Girardi: You know, her hypothesis actually has promise. I mean, the-the idea of a community garden can be tied to some key aspects of quantum theory.
- Grace Polk: Lay it on me. I can't get through my paper. It's too much research.
- Luke Girardi: Hey, we're having a conversation.
- Grace Polk: Not anymore. Just lay it on me.
