- Richard is shocked when he is offered the prospect of early retirement. But shock soon turns to worry when he realizes that this proposition would mean spending all his time with Hyacinth. Hyacinth of course is oblivious to Richard's worry and focuses her attention on impressing Emmet with her singing.—Nadia Nassar
- Hyacinth answers the phone. "Do I sound like a Chinese takeaway? Kindly clear this line". She goes to Richard and she said she was insulted on her own telephone. She wants Richard to contact the Chinese Ambassador to get the Chinese takeaway from calling on her phone. Rose is upset about her boyfriend. Rose decides to give up men. Hyacinth is in the garden and waves to a passing bicyclist. She chides him for going too fast. He almost has a wreck. Two women come along, and she asks them to not cough or sneeze too loudly. She tells them Richard is on the phone to the Chinese ambassador, and she does not want him disturbed. She decides to call Sheridan. Emmet creeps out of the house, dragging Liz behind him. They get into the car. Liz slams the door, and Emmet is upset because Hyacinth might hear the noise. Then Emmet decides to push the car to the street without starting the engine. He chides Liz for not being able to lie. He pushes the car to the street. Hyacinth is walking along the sidewalk with some flowers. She volunteers to get Richard to help push the car. Rose decides she wants to go away where there are no men. She fusses at Daisy for reading romantic books. Onslow is watching an auto race on the television. Richard and Emmet and Hyacinth are looking at the cars engine, and Liz attempts to start it, and it starts instantly. Hyacinth inquires as to where Liz and Emmet are going. Liz admits it is the church hall. Hyacinth did not know there is a function. They almost escape, when Hyacinth has an idea for Emmet. "You play and I'll sing". She says she will see them at the church hall. Emmet rolls his eyes and they drive away. Hyacinth is on the phone with the Vicar's wife. She says they have a surprise entertainment for the old people. The Vicar's wife is upset because she will have to tell the Vicar about Hyacinths proposal. Hyacinth is trying to select a dress and she wants Richard's opinion as to which one to wear. The phone rings. Liz and Emmet arrive at the church hall and Emmet is furious with Liz for not lying. Liz said that she had to tell or Hyacinth would have pulled out her fingernails. The phone call was from Richard's boss and he wants to know how Richard feels about early retirement. Richard is devastated. Onslow has a dog in his lap when Rose comes in dressed in black with a black veil. She turns off the television. Onslow thinks he has gone blind. Rose wants to know how she looks. Rose says she is going to become a nun. Rose plans on getting a recommendation from the Vicar. Richard is outside the house, at the car, waiting for Hyacinth, and thinking about early retirement. Hyacinth wants him to open the car door. He opens the wrong one. She wants to know what is the matter with him. He is very distracted. Hyacinth blows the horn at him. They are driving to the church hall. She is talking about the music. Richard wants to talk about early retirement. She wonders if she should wear leather shorts. Richard wants her to listen when he is talking about early retirement. She tells Richard to turn right, and they immediately go into someone's driveway. The Vicar's wife wants the Vicar to keep away from the ladies. Richard and Hyacinth arrive at the vicarage. Hyacinth wants to ask the Vicar if he has any favorite songs he would like for her to sing. The Vicar comes out and is horrified to see Hyacinth and Richard in the driveway. The Vicar asks his wife to tell Hyacinth he has been called away to Russia. Hyacinth is concerned about Richard's distraction. She does not let Richard talk. She keeps interrupting. The church bell rings, and she says they have got to leave immediately for the church hall. Rose is walking onto the church hall grounds in her black outfit with a very short skirt, and a veil. Hyacinth interrupts Rose during her walk. Rose acts drunk. Rose and Hyacinth start to struggle on the steps to the church hall. Richard pulls Rose off Hyacinth, then Richard and Hyacinth drag Rose into the foyer of the church hall. Rose is collapsing in their arms. She is obviously very drunk. She says she only took some pills. Then Rose starts giggling and they try to stuff her into a closet off the foyer. Liz rushes through, and Hyacinth intercepts her with music suggestions for Emmet. Liz rushes off to get Emmet. Meanwhile, the Vicar creeps out of his home and he is very happy to see Hyacinth is gone. At the hall, Hyacinth is singing and a reluctant Emmet is playing the piano, and Hyacinth is giving him instructions. She fusses at him for not playing the correct notes. Hyacinth becomes vociferous. Emmet is boiling. Liz is looking on anxiously. Emmet blows up and says he cannot take it any longer. Hyacinth wants to know what he cannot take any longer. Liz says it is the chair. He marches out the door, sees poor Richard sitting in a chair and tells him, "Oh, shut up!" Rose and Emmet come staggering into the hall, arms around each other. The Vicar comes in, sees the melee, and dashes out the door. Hyacinth shoves Rose into the closet with the Vicar. The Vicar's wife comes in, goes into the closet and sees Rose on top of the Vicar. Hyacinth faints. The episode ends.
