Alcoholic former detective
bkoganbing14 August 2019
One of the saddest episodes in the history of the Kojak series was this one with Eugene Roche playing a street cop who used to be one of Kojak's in Midtown South.

Roche a former detective is now a foot patrolman who has been become an alcoholic. One night when he was off duty and boozing it up with a friend he sees a robbery in progress and tries to stop it. But the bad guys overcome him, take his weapon and shoot his friend.

It's too late for him in the NYPD, Telly Savalas gives him some good advice to just coast for the next two years and the pension will kick in.. But Roche can't be told what to do. He starts his own investigation and does good at it. But the end result isn't good for Roche.

This may be one of Eugene Roche's best performance. Usually Roche plays blowhard bragadocious types. This is a different twist and dimension to what we usually get from Roche. It dominates the episode.

A Feeling Of Dread For The Viewer
ccthemovieman-17 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Eugene Roche is very good in here as Patrolman "Lyle 'Sandy' Beach."

Roache is one of many television personalities who face we all know but who's name we may not recognize. In this episode, he plays a disgraced cop who desperately wants to get back to his detective post and prove to his peers he's a good cop, after all.

He goes through a lot to prove it, and you have a feeling of dread that something bad is going to happen to him, especially after he starts convincing Kojak (and us viewers) that he really is on the straight-and-narrow.

That's all I'll say on that topic, but, suffice to say, this is what they call a good "character study."

Not drunken behavior

Warning: Spoilers
This was a sad, poignant episode, and it seems the actor Eugene Roche often plays these types of characters. The episode shows a lot of sensitivity to the issues of alcoholism and the struggle people undergo. For that reason, I would say it is commendable, at least from a concept level. This period of time (mid-seventies) ushered in a flood of these types of stories, with fallible characters battling substance abuse.

However, the story falls down a bit in the latter half. A guy who walks out of a bar drunk as Sandy Beach was would not have the wherewithal to come up with the plan that he did with the blind man.
